Just got it delivered today and from what I have read so far it is a story of several young men from Argyll who came to Glasgow and formed a fitba team for truly sporting reasons and not sectarian issues unlike two others we could mention...

It seems that the Teddy Bears abandoned their original colours of Royal Blue jerseys and white knickerbockers in preference for Blue and White Hoops in season 1879/1880 and played in these colours for almost three seasons before reverting back to their original colours. Celtic weren't founded until 1887 four years after Rangers gave up 'ra Hoops'...it was to be almost 20 years after Rangers dumped their Hooped jerseys before Celtic adopted them as their own just prior to the First World War.
Rangers were also refered to as the 'Swifts' or the 'Shields'...the shields was obviously a reference to the 'Shield of David' which was worn on their jerseys. The 'shield of David' is also known as the Star of David design which features on the Israeli and Northern Ireland flags.

Rangers were formed in 1872 by young men from the Gareloch, mainly members of the McNeil family of which there were seven brothers, who had left their native Argyll to live and work in Glasgow. Initially they formed themselves into a rowing club and would take part in this leisure pursuit on the River Clyde. Legend has it they pulled up on the banks of the Flesher's Haugh, which is where the football parks still are on the Glasgow Green , for a rest after several hours rowing. They watched as a local team known as The Eastern played a match against some other team and they were enthralled at this new sports past-time which was sweeping the nation. So much so they decided to start up their own team which were initially named Argyle and they played their first ever game at Flesher's Haugh against a team known as Clyde. Three of the McNeil brothers, the three oldest, were never interested so the newly founded football team consisted of William, Harry , Moses and Peter and their friends. William was gifted a football by a Mr.McDonald of the Glasgow firm of Stewart & McDonald in Buchanan Street. After they had played their opening match they decided to form an official club and join a League - the younger members of the team decided that William McNeil was to old to play. The petulant William decided to pick up his ball and told them " If you can't have me , you can't have my ball' - how many times did we hear those famous words when playing fitba as weans in the street or 'roon the back. Not to be out done the younger boys held a subscription to buy a new ball and told the huffy William where to stick his ba'... Soon after Moses McNeil proposed that the club should adapt the name The Rangers . He had read of an English rugby team team called The Rangers when reading C.W.Alcock's "English Football Annual"...the rest they say is history. ;D ;D ;D

The memorial stone in Glasgow Green which marks the fact that Rangers were formed in the Glasgow Green in 1872...obviously this historic site is not respected by some Glaswegians and is forever being vandalised.

I see the fitba is ready to start. Sadly I do not have any fervour for it as I am totally sick of the people who run OUR club and have no intention of going to Ibrox whilst the present Fascist regime are in power and lining their pockets...and whilst that wee fhanny fae the east coast plays for Rangers and chases crisps pokes flying in the air ye can forget it.

Ah well what can you say that? Out dated tactics, mediocre players, a chairman and manager who don’t care about the fans, Kenny Miller, sell our best player last season to replace them with guys who wouldn’t get a game for most SPL teams, take in around £30million and bring in average players at best, did I mention Kenny Miller?
Still some will still be too blind to see Maorray is a Cancer on club if it wasn’t for two last day wins in the league we would be looking at Celtic going for 9 in a row this year. One day maybe the sheep will wake up but I don’t think it will soon sadly. One day we will be to say this again.

most of them would be lucky to get a game in junior football. how on earth did christian dailly get 65 caps playing for scotland, the guy is brainless. about 16 years as a professional, and he can't control the ball with his chest for that matter he can't even pass a ball, just like most of his team mates. chronic to watch. i think smiths past his sell by date. there doesn't seem to be any plan B orC,( i read your mind,)no plan A.either.i just feel sorry for the season ticket holders, and the travelling support who have to watch this rubbish, and,i believe they won't improve unless some rich guy comes along and buys murray out.

I said it last season that we were punching way above our weight in Europe and have to admit I was totally amazed to reach the EUFA Cup Final. However, to throw away the league the way they did in the last seven games only proved that they weren't good enough and did not have enough skill in depth to win a league which they practically gifted to Celtic irrespective of the backlog of games. Smith's refusal to introduce Buffel was nothing short of criminal and the treatment of Boyd was and still is disgraceful...you do not go to war and leave your best soldier sitting in reserve.
The buys this year have been terrible and to introduce a player which the majority of fans detest only shows what Murray and his lapdogs think of our support and Murray's Malaise runs right through the club from the boardroom , the management , the admin and ticket office and now down to the fans. Yet there are thousands who believe that there is no hope without Murray and still act like lemmings and buy into everything he sells them...time these guys woke up and walked for a season or two and force Murray to sell out at a bargain basement price as it would do his business concerns unbelievable damage if they were connected to a middle of the league Scottish Premier team. Drastic measure's I know and it hurts me even to suggest it for a club that I love but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind and it should every Rangers fans shibboleth to 'Get Murray Out' before we are put out of business by this dictator.

Hi Charlie
Dont know if this is the type of stuff ye are gonna allow on this thread.
Ah huv a Rangers glass (slightly bigger than 1/2 pint) dated 1962 showing double cup winners inscribed "SCOTTISH CUP WINNERS 1962" and "SCOTTISH LEAGUE CUP WINNERS 1962" signed by players like Davy Wilson, Jimmy Millar, Ralph Brand, Bobby Shearer, Jim Baxter, Eric Caldow.....
I remember thinking season 2002 they won both cups again an ah would huv liked if the brought oot a similar comemorative glass to match the one that a huv (40 years apart)

OK folks I will be altering and deleting most of the posts on here and we will concentrate on the history of the club rather than snide remarks and back biting which can be posted elsewhere...so from now on historic documents and items of a historic nature only on this topic. Thought this might be the thread to post this medal, one of the oldest Rangers medals you are liable to see, sports day pre-ibrox, kinning park 1885.

Any idea what year this photo was taken Not quite sure when the photo was taken Billy but it is definitely pre-1929 as that was when the Archie Leitch designed Main Stand was opened which post-dates the one shown in the photograph. Legend has it that Bill Struth had a couple of greenhouses at the bottom of the stairs in the forefront of the photo which is the traditional Celtic end of the ground. During all the years that the green houses were located there never once were they damaged in anyway by away fans visiting the ground...I doubt if the same would happen in today's fitba culture.

Would date that postcard image to to somewhere nearer 1900 Charlie, if you look close enough you might see Struths windae in the Copeland Rd, at that John O Hara Celtic dinner i was at last week we had a table for 10 and near the end of the night Pat Woods the Celtic Historian came over and sat beside me, one of the bhoys happened to mention Struth and a few said aw that wee bigot, Pat went on at length to point out that he wasnt really, i listened with interest what he had to say and i left at the end of the night with a changed opinion of the wee man with the Green fingers im sure you know Alan Morton the wee blue devil was Struths first and best signing, you might find it hard to believe Charlie but i once paid 4 figures for Alan Mortons medal, i kept it for years in the hope that someone would come up with a rare Celtic medal for a swap, nobody ever did and i sold it at auction a few years ago, the pic below shows big Jackson showing it aff to the TV cameras before it went up for sale, i also sold a rare medal won by Nicol Smith at the same sale, (check out his sad tale if you have not heard of him)

Jamie I have Pat Woods's book the Glory and The Dream which I think is a good history of Celtic and I respect him for his contribution towards the history of football even though I have no great love of his subject matter...the Celtic.
As for Bill Struth being a bigot it is a hard one to prove because no one has the definitive meaning of the name bigot and how do you judge a person to be a bigot. If Struth was so anti-Catholic he would never have been so friendly with the Maley brothers who were friends of his and always invited to and attended every main function organised by the club. Likewise I always argue the toss with Rangers fans when it comes to Maley and his statement 'I hope it was an accident when Thomson and English clashed and it resulted in John Thomson's death'. I honestly believe that Maley hoped it was an accident for the sake of football sanity and relationships between the two clubs otherwise I doubt very much if he would've invited English and Struth to the Memorial Service and unveiling of the Thomson Memorial a year later.
These men lived in different times and it is hard to understand what life was like for our generation looking back to those days and trying not be judgemental. Yes Rangers had an unwritten policy of not signing Catholics from immediatedly prior to the Great War and there are many theories as to why they had this policy and why it was allowed to continue up until about twenty five years ago. I have my own theories on this and I reckon it is was more a reflection on Scottish society rather than just Rangers as a football club...yes there has always been an element of anti-Irishness in Scotland but one must stand back and ask the question - why? However, that is for another thread and not the history of Rangers Football Club.
