BRIDGETON CROSS. The place at present so named is a misnomer. Camlachie Burn is the boundary between Bridgeton and Calton, and this so-called Cross, being on the west side of the burn, is therefore in Calton. The Cross proper is at the junction of Reid Street and Dale Street, and the spot was for many years marked with a cross in the roadway by stones sunk in the macadam. It is referred to in the minute-book of the Bridgeton Feuar Court, which was the governing authority previous to annexation to the city. This minute-book unfortunately got mutilated accidentally, and there is only a small portion of it now in existence. But sufficient has been stated to locate the Cross of this suburb, although there is no historic record to prove it, as Mr. Renwick seems to think is awanting in the case of the Cross in Rottenrow. Record indeed! Bridgeton is of yesterday, no building or house in it being yet 200 years old. J. W. Small, in his "Scottish Market Crosses," says:-" In many cases I did not find any Cross where I had been led to suppose a Cross existed, but in one exceptional case I found a cross marked in the causeway." So it was with Bridgeton, but on making a pilgrimage to the shrine a few weeks since I found the vandals had swept the mark away. Sanitary affairs were conducted in rather a primitive fashion in Bridgeton up til 1830, when the contractor for cleansing was bound to sweep the street only six times during the year, for which he got the handsome remuneration of £3 lOs. Two years later, when the contractor was James Roberton, farmer, Dalmarnock, it is mentioned in the minute-book that he was awarded an additional ten shillings for having given the streets an extra touch up. This gentleman, by the way, it may be mentioned, was the father of a late leading legal luminary in this city, Sir James Roberton. Pavements in this district up till this date were unknown, and, without even the Auld Reekie warning of "Gardie loo," buckets of slops were shot out from front doors on to the common thoroughfare, so that wayfarers had to be wary or they got soused.

My pals dad used to have the opticians shop on the corner of the cross in the 50s and 60s, his son (my pal) has followed him and now owns the optician shop in Easterhouse. Their name is Abrahams and the shop was just on the corner of London Rd. right behind the umbrella in the photo.

Brian was the Abrahams not the family who had the opticians facing Newlands School and they now have the Medal and Coin shop in St.Vincent Place...

Naw Mrs Mcgoo I went to the shop for my glasses in Brigton and still go to his shop in Easterhouse, nobody is having me on, I remember it as clear as day. His son is still my friend and can verify everything that I have said, so I am not backing down on this one. They are a Jewish family and sadly the father passed away and they closed the Bridgeton shop. But they have kept two others going, one in Easterhouse and one in Gifnock.
Brian.

Next to the sweetie shop was a bothy for the caur drivers and the clippies. I was never out of it when my Maw worked in Ruby Street Depot. Then a wee alley which gave you entry to the close in the back which was number 3 Bridgeton Cross and it is still there...dont recall what was there after the alley but there was a bank there afew yards by the alley when I worked in Alexander Stores in the Main Street in 1969 - and on the corner was the Cactus Bar.

Looking at the photo posted by Nell it clearly say the King's Cafe next to the Alley but her photo is well before the time that Brian is talking about...think we will need to get Peter to check out the Kelly's Street Directory for this one. Looked at another book and found a photo taken in 1989 of an Orange walk passing the same place and the shop is called Peter's.

No I am sorry Mrs. McGoo, but you are still wrong. I have just checked with my friend and the details I gave regarding the location were correct, although I was a bit out with the date. The shop was there from about 1968 to well into the 1980s. The optician shop was just on the bend at the cross between Main St. and London Rd. it's actual address was 16a. Bridgeton Cross. It had a shared entrance with another shop that may have been a chemist at 16b. The doors to the two shops sat at an angle to each other inside the entrance. I know I am right on this one - Brian.

I dont know if it helps, but my 1976/77 GPO Directory shows J. Abrahams at no. 16 Bridgeton Cross, a couple of doors down from the Bank of Scotland at no. 10, and going the other way was Vernal Bros at no. 28 and Watson Bakers at no. 32.
They did have a shared entrance with A. McKendrick as Brian says, according to the directory
The shop is actually off picture in the image at the start of the thread, as it doesn't show that particular tenement run and shops, which would have been on the rh side, if the camera had panned round a little.

Ok so Mr pmw's book said it was Number 16 ? right mr charlton - go type up 16 Bridgeton Cross on googles earth - see what happens the optician should have given you stronger specs, cos you got the wrong building ..."Their name is Abrahams and the shop was just on the corner of London Rd right behind the umbrella in the photo"[/b] (quote brian) Thanks Mr pmw [/quote] Far be it for me to cause a rammy but there is a 16 and a 16A Bridgeton Cross as I just jumped out to check...about two doors up from where Vernal Brothers used to be heading towards James Street. And now that I know where exactly where it is Brian I seem to remember it when I worked in Main Street back in the 1960's. There was also a Tailor's up the close next to the shop as well.

Looking through the poles of the Umbrella the red shop to the left in the Curry Shop and the next shop with the red front and sign above the door is now the barber shop at 16 Bridgeton Cross and directly next to it is a shop painted black which is 16A...obviously both shops shared the same entrance at one time.
