Some of you will remember the wee park at the bottom of Tobago Street and London Road which had the bench and the plaque with the poem engraved on it. The park was always a bit of a mystery to our generation as to why it was there etc., A couple of years ago a history trail booklet for the Calton claimed it was built as a memorial to the 29 female workers of the nearby Templeton's Carpet factory who were killed when a gable end fell on top of one of the weaving sheds back in 1889. However, I have recently came across a newspaper clipping from the Glasgow Eastern Standard which not only does not mention this disaster or a memorial park but claims that the park was opened for an entirely different reason. There is a definite Templeton's link but nothing to do with remembering the disaster. I am now faced with the dilema do I bring it to the attention of the newly formed Calton Heritage group who's meeting I attended on Friday...or do I forever hold my tongue! The official unveiling of the newly dedicated memorial and footpath will take place on the Anniversary of the 1889 Disaster on the 1st of November coming.

The usual Carol. I was embroiled in something else and before I knew it I was chasing my tail again and ended up deciding not to go after having ironed my shirt and showered...the hair fever attack during the day did not put me in the best of moods either.

Well that is the first day over and done with and it was hectic to say the least. I suppose one or two teething problems were going to happen but we survive the crisis and are looking forward to settling in in our new home. I feel as if I have went the full circle as my great grandmother moved to nearby Barrowfield Street in the 1890's soon after my great grandfather died in 1888 and she raised her two sons there with great hardship and struggle. My other great grandparents lived in Frazer Street and I was brought up on the London Road facing 'the Brickfield' as the old Mile-Enders used to call the housing scheme. And of course in nearby Mountainblue Street was the original ground of Bridgeton Waverley Football Club with which I have many connections with from the days they were formed and until they went defunct both as a Junior side and latterly an Amateur side. I am already feeling a wee history Project coming on with the 'auld yins' and I have only been there a day.

Went to see the play The Sash tonight in the King's Theatre and really enjoyed it. Mind you I was keen to take part in the Question and Answers thingy with the director after the play had finished but for some reason my three pals huckled me out the door and into the car...I wonder why

I have been working on a Clanny site all day on my Facebook Page. Here is a clip from it... www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0NT6aUwN8c&feature=player_embedded#! Who remembers the day of the England v Scotland International at Wembley in 1996 which was surely one of the best days in living memory in the auld Clanny when we took on the Braveheart look for the day. When Gazza scored that wonder goal I didn't know whether to cheer or feckin' greet especially as he shagged two Rangers players when he scored it , Colin Hendry and Andy Goram. A brilliant day nevertheless for all of us who attended... ;D

Who remembers this commentary... Nacho Novo, with one kick of the ball to take Rangers to Manchester. The ball isn't sat on the spot. Manchester brace yourself AND RANGERS ARE COMING! SCOTLAND WILL HAVE IT'S BIG NIGHT AS WELL!! The Scots are heading for Manchester, and you know what, Manchester may not be big enough. They won't need visa's, they won't need passports, but the battle for tickets starts now. Brace yourself Manchester, they are on their way! That's all

I had a surprise visit today from AndyMo at the work. He later ran me up the road and ended up coming in the Clanny for a pint which was his first ever visit to the pub that is the unofficial headquarters of the Glesga Keelies. I don't know what his first impressions of the place were but I will leave him to tell you himself... Anyway Andy it was great to see you and I look forward to your next visit to the Clanny and we will really roll out the red carpet for you and allow you into the inner chamber of the Clanny Lounge.

Like most people I was sorry to read that Sir Chris Hoy has decided to retire at the age of 38... Several reasons have been given but it has been suggested that he does not want to be used as a publicity puppet for wee Herr Fuhrer Salmond and the Scots Nazis in the run-up to next years Referendum Vote. It seems the wee Fuhrer did not take too kindly to Sir Chris constantly waving the Union Flag in preference to the Saltire when he was smashing all the world records and collecting gold medals for fun at the Olympics. Never fear folks guess who is joining the Glesga Club fitness classes at the Velodrome next week...yours truly. And once the stamina levels are re-introduced I am getting on my bike and peddling like a mad man around that velodrome track. Sir Charles De Bulloch McDonald of Barrowfield and Camlachie, the Flying Scotsman has a nice wee ring to it don't you think folks. ;D

... Muhammad must go to the mountain.
A bit of good news for once in what has been a really trying week for me. As you all know my oldest lassie, Lorraine, in Australia is expecting her first child in June. Everybody has been asking me 'are you going over for the birth, the christening etc., .' Only to be told 'Naw' I am not up for long flights to Australia or anywhere else in that region so I was quite happy to wait and see the new baby when it was due home to Britain for it's first visit in September.
I got a phone call this morning from Lorraine telling me that she, Greg and the baby are coming home to Europe for 9 months during her maternity leave in September. They will base themselves in Paris which means they are only just over an hour away from old Grumpy here in Glesga and Greg's parents in Dublin.
Greg lived in Paris for several years and he speaks the lingo like a native and he should get himself a job there during his sabbatical from the company they both work for back in Sydney.
So things are on the up and up regards some aspects of our family life...a definite case of 'If McDonald won't come to the Mulligans...the Mulligans must go to the McDonald !' ;D

I am sorry folks but there has been a slight set-back in the launch of the new board. My mate David came up to my house yesterday to set=up the board as I was due to leave for London last night on the Sleeper Train. We had no sooner started to create the board when I received a phone call from my cousin Sandra telling me her mother had died,
To say I am absolutely shattered is an understatement as my Auntie Margaret was one of the most genuine people I have ever known and a lovely, lovely woman who along with my Uncle Archie raised four great children.
Needless to say I wasn't in the mood for working on a web-site and just told David to go home and we will deal with it another day. I took the decision as well not to travel down to London where I was due to attend the Watford and Burnley game today and the Arsenal v Reading game tomorrow and the Millwall v Ipswich game on Monday.
David took the basics of what I had managed to write up for the new board and he will work on it as soon as he gets back from Budapest next week.
Aye life can be a pure bassa when you are least expecting it...

I happened to be down on a work assignment to the Travellers and Show People site in Shore Street down by Swanston Street the other day. I noticed the facade of a small churh like building still standing whilst the rest of the building has been demolished. Does anyone recall a church in this area other than the main Church of Scotland building in the nearby Rockcliffe Street. I have been doing some research on this area and it has a fascinating history which has been ignored for some reason or another.
