I would recommend a visit to the Scottish National War Memorial to anyone as I doubt if there is a more sacred place in Scotland. I have visited it a few times but was once given a personal tour and it was absolutely amazing as I had missed so much on the previous occasions...the beautiful wooden carving is Saint Michael the Lord of the Host and it is suspended from the ceiling over an Ark of the Covenant which holds the names of all Scots Soldiers killed in the Great War. www.snwm.org/website/frames.html

I think it only registers the dead of Scots Regiments McGoo...so if your Granda was in the Connaught Rangers then they as a regiment will not be listed in the memorial books. Not sure but contact them directly and they will let you know.

yes your correct charlie yu have a good memory eh?
Thing is written on the back of the photie is 'private charles Goldie 2nd Batt Scottish Rifles' so seems he must have changed regiments (if that is the correct term)
I think it might be his own handwriting i will scan and put on the correct thread

I will try and get a better photo this time around when I go over there two weeks today...Charles Goldie of the Connaught Rangers on the Pozieres Memorial...will make sure I have a sponge and a bottle of water which will bring out the writing which is rather eroded if I remember correctly.
