Where's the Tappit Hen , then? And The Coffin? Pie Orr's and the old General Wolfe at Vinegarhill? And Muldoon's at Puddin' Pen and Mick Cush's and the Hairy Man? And the wee Spaniard's, eh?
All gone. All pubs of age and character in Glasgow's street of pubs, the Gallowgate. That was once the staggering boast of the city's East End with the Gallowgate two and a quarter miles long, running from Glasgow Cross from Parkhead Cross.
But the pubs are getting fewer and farther between. There is only one every 79 yards now changing face and tradition before the sledge hammer of redevelopment. Any old buildings just falling down on themselves.
This morning you can count 51 pubs in the Gallowgate. Eight banks , yes.One Pawnbrokers. And the ever faithful corner dairy or two.
'Split Lip ' Wilson the Gallowgate bobby put in by the legendary Stillitoe during his gang busting days to keep a firm hand on the Gallowgate would weep if they saw it now,
pIE Orr's the licensed restaurant much frequented by the meat market traders is a furniture shop. The Coffin's just a derelict space. And the club where folk like Nancy Whiskey and Matt McGinn started went in a puff of demolition dust.
They say Primo Canera , Jack Johnston , Joe Louis and Buffalo Bill Cody all visited The Coffin. But boasting down the Gallowgate was always a bit of survival instinct.
The Tappit Hen is a meat cash and carry. And the McNulty's and the Bradley's have long since called their own 'Time' and someone greater than them all has called for a lot more too.
Do you remember them? The Mill Inn at Holywell Street, and Eddy's Bar, McDonald's at Bluevale Street and Kelly's that was really The Grapes.
Pat Gallagher, licensee of the Flamingo can remember when the Gallowgate had only 65 pubs. But that was only a few days ago in 1937. "Redevelopment is just slicing through the East End. They will build two big schools just outside here. We'll have to go too Folks."
