The Pippin is now closed Joanie awaiting demolition. I cannot remember a cafe there but I do remember the jumps in the back court behind it and Evanoe's Cafe come Chip Shop.

The winner was a guy called spider(think you mentioned him on g.p) runner up was specky paty(John Paterson) I'm not sure of the spelling of the actress that presented the prizes, Adrianne Cory. The spider I knew was Rab McAleer.

The Pippin and the pie eating contest. A few of us from Salamanca Street went up to the pie eating contest but must have got the wrong night. We ended up sitting up the stairs in the Pippin lounge talking to this guy who was a stranger to us. He was asking about who were the local hardmen and telling us about the Glasgow gangsters he knew, to cut a long story short, we all left the Pippin together and he opened up the boot of his car that was parked outside the pub to reveal a couple of shot guns. we made a quick exit and he drove away. I'm sure the guy was Jimmy Boyle in his pre-prison reform days but could be mistaken. Does Spider have a younger brother called the Beatle, after the fab four, who ran about Salamanca Street? Charlie, I thought the the jumps were round the back of the other side of the Granada? My mum and Da used to go up to the Pippin for a "wee refreshment" early on Saturday nights, sad to hear its being demolished.

Kiltie I have just noticed this posting ...yes Spider is alive and well and a member of Belvidere Bowling Club and he has a house in Helenvale Street overlooking Parkhead Bowling Club. A really good friend of mine is Mr.McAleer...small world indeed lads. ;D

Charlie, does he have a younger brother that used to be (still is) nicknamed "beatle" because he had a hair cut like the group in the 60's, don't imagine he will still have it that way now?

I used to go over on a Wednesday night with my aunty. Way back (when boxing was on the telly) I would go over and watch the bouts - my aunty and the other women would stay over the other side not interested. I think both of my aunts have been lady presidents (if that's the right expression, I'm not a bowler). I know both of their names are on the board, one of them appears twice iirc. and I was invited as my aunts guest to the opening day the year she was lady president (that was about 20 years' ago). When she passed away in Sept 2005 it was the men from the bowling club that were her pall bearers. Small world
