My father served in The R.A.F. before and during the second world war, mostly in the Far East.
He served in India, Colombo Ceylon, Burma, Singapore, Malaya, Java, he was moved all over those countries, too many times to type.
He was an avid photographer, I have hundreds of photos taken during the war but a lot of them have no ID as to where , who or when they were taken.
I can validate these photos as being from his album and most of them were taken by a Box Brownie.
First photo ,Crescent Court Calcutta, year unknown but may have been 1942 my father is in second row, 2cnd from left.
I always thought that my father was a pilot, you can see why ;D
Turns out he was trained as a fitter in RAF but was a painter and decorator to trade.
Other photos show him near planes, ah boyhood dreams.
I wish I had asked him about the war but he never talked of it unless it was to others who also served in the forces.
My father is on the right hand side.
My father doing what he served his time for, Painting ;D ;D
I do remember my Father talking to another service man, he was saying that the instructor in the RAF was trying to teach him how to paint the RAF roundels on the planes, using compasses.
My father said he didn't need them, the instructor asked him to demonstrate if he could, egg on face of instructor.
Funny the little stories that stick in your mind.
I was of course ear wigging to adult conversation ;D ;D ;D ;D
Another photo that made me think dad was a pilot ;D
My father is on the left, flying gear this time, no wonder I thought he was a pilot ;D
I wonder if my father got into trouble for pointing a pistol at this serviceman
This photo has been labelled " all Scottish"
My father is on the left, no ID on the other two.
India 1942, my father is 2cnd from left, looks like a boxing pose ;D
He did win some bouts while in the RAF.
Bye for now, Norrie
India 10-8-1942, my father is in the middle.
Now why did this photo have some info on it, mind you no mention as to who the other guys were.
Bukit Jimah, number one motor transport.
My father on bike.
This one was written up as , to mother with love George.
My father is sitting down reading.
My father with the car he had use of in Singapore, 10-1-1942
I wonder how long he had it.
When did Singapore fall into Japanese hands?
The fall of Singapore to the Japanese Army on February 15th 1942 is considered one of the greatest defeats in the history of the British Army and probably Britain’s worst defeat in World War Two. The fall of Singapore in 1942 clearly illustrated the way Japan was to fight in the Far East – a combination of speed and savagery that only ended with the use of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in August1945.
See, I told you my dad was a boxer
Not sure if it was first prize or second prize, the hand makes me think he lost ;D ;D ;D
