I came across this wee cracker inside the cover of a book I have at home Justjoe...the History of the 7th Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers. Glasgow 1884 "The French fight for glory, the Germans for a living, the Russians to divert the attention of the people from home affairs; but John Bull is a reasonable , moral , reflecting character. He fights to promote trade, to maintain peace and order on the face of the earth. and the good of mankind in general. If he conquers a nation, it is to improve its condition in this world and secure its welfare in the next; "Give me your territory and I will give you the Bible. "Exchange no robbery. - From 'John Bull and His Island'" Despite being small in number and in land mass Little Britain can still have some influence in the modern world and fine well the rest of Europe knows it...

we'll just need to agree to disagree. I've never been a Nat, but definetly not a Unionist either.
Proud to be from Glasgow though.

I have to admit that I was a rabid Nationalist ever since I was a wean at school and was so up until my mid 20's when I became disilluisioned with politics in Scotland around about the Devolution Debate time. I started to get back an interest in politics a few years later but was soon dismayed with certain sections of the Scots Nationalist Party who were all but Irish Republicans except by name. Not long after this I started to take a more serious interest in Scots and British history and more so in military history which puts a completely different spin on things from that of politics...now I just tend to concentrate more on people rather than politicians. I hope I never see the day that Scotland becomes Independent from the rest of the UK as I do feel it would be detrimental to the long term future of the country I love. To be truthful the whole political scene in this country is a sham and the Tartan Taliban are a continual embarrassment...I cannot wait to see the Labour Party wipe the floor with these numpties at the next election.

I guess people are apathetic all over the place Joe and the Labour Party have been only a shadow of their former selves...I still cannot believe how smug wee smarmy face Salmond gets when he is on the telly. Does this man really believe that his party would be in power had there been a revote on those 140,000 spoilt paperrs...he is well named the Scottish Mugabe.

I guess at the end of the day I just don't like Nationalists of any sort wether they be Scottish , Irish or British Nationalists they all seems to have too many hang-ups and an axe to wield with anyone who disagrees with them.

I agree Charlie. There is a dark side to Nationalism Yes there is a world of difference between Nationalism and Patriotism school of thought AndyMo...the European wars of the 20th Century are witness to that.
