The Italians have made a significant contribution to east end life, many of them having cafes, chip shops and hairdressers. Some examples ;
1) Coia's Cafe, Duke Street, the family have been trading from 1928 I think, serving ice cream, hot peas, ice drinks etc. Their present premises is fast becoming a fashionable eatery with eastenders, with a varied menu to suit all tastes.
2) Johnny Ionta's ; Hairdresser on the Gallowgate, near to Wesleyan Street. It was not so much as a haircut but a cabaret / vaudeville show. The patter was brilliant as 'Wee Johnny' his brother Danny and another guy whose name I can't recollect would keep you entertained and give you a haircut to boot. Always mobbed. Does anyone know whatever became of this family ??
3) Joe Eusebi : Hairdresser at 1002 Shettleston Road. The shop suffered a tragedy on the 18th of June 1981 when the tenement which contained the premises collapsed, with two deaths.
What are your memories of Italian shopkeepers in the east end ??

On out stretch of London Road the Connetta family were prominent the family included George and Lucy. There was also 'John the Tallys' Cafe just before Boden Street whose son Aldo was killed when a boy threw a railing out of a three storey window.
Wee Johnny's shop was real street theatre...wee Johnny's son has a shop in Hyndland a wee bit more upmarket than the Gallowgate shop.

Hyndland will never be as 'gallus' as the Gallowgate
