Originally ran from 1281 Duke Street though is now much altered
Named after the British victory at Salamanca in Spain over the French forces.
At number 121 stood the Pheonix Cabinet Works, built in 1896 for Crichton & Mooney, upholsterers. It later became the premises of Fyfe, Douglas & Co. Ltd., coffin manufacturers. The site is now occupied by JCJ Demolition.

The holy corner in Salamanca Street was the Chapel at the junction of Nisbet Street, St Michaels School further down Nisbet Street, the annex of the school on Salamanca Street itself between Nisbet Street and Ravel Row and the priests house across the road from it. The back of the school annex faced the back of the Prince Charlie pub and at the front of this area on Nisbet Street itself across from Annies shop stood some old houses that were demolished in the fifties leaving a U shape of spare ground that was used for the marathon 25 a side fitba matches.

Not sure.....but we were moved out of Dunbar Street in 1973....and that was just across Duke Street so think it may have been about the same time.

I was out of the country then so whit happened, what do you mean by evacuation, did they have to move everyone out at the same time for some reason then pull all the tenements down from Duke St to Nisbet St at the same time, or was it over a number of years?

Could you please send me the name of the book that you got this photograph from as I am sure that it may breach copyright regulations and if I do not acknowledge the source I may have to remove it as the original artist can demand that we remove it and may sue for breach of copyright. Sorry to be a 'nerd' but sometimes when copyright is breached a site can be/ and have been closed down by irate photographers.

The photo doesn't look like it's taken in the 1970's it looks more like the 50's, there were some gaps where tenements used to be along Salamanca st when I ran about there in the 60's, so maybe it's one of them
