I took a wee leisurely stroll down to Belvidere the other day just to see a few old friends. I am hearing that they have agreed a five figure fee with the English Bowling Federation and the BBC for use of their premises during the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Plus into the bargain they are also getting a new boundary wall built free of charge where they once had an old hedge and fence where the Strathies used to be. Great to hear at least some local groups are benefitting from the Games.

What a great boost to their funds that will be Charlie. So many Bowling clubs are struggling to survive these days, it's so nice to hear good news like this

What a great boost to their funds that will be Charlie. So many Bowling clubs are struggling to survive these days, it's so nice to hear good news like this bowling clubs are suffering because they would not change with the times, tried to join a few clubs in the 80s only to be knocked back for reasons that where never explained, been to 3 in the east end in the last couple of weeks still same people with the same attitude as they where in the 70s/80s (ie. thats been my seat for 40yrs ) the other reason is the age of the membership mostly 60s & over, they done nothing to encourage young people to take up the sport.

Sadly Andy this true. I know they have a good youth policy in Belvidere and some of the best bowlers they have had in recent years were products of their own youth scheme but sdaly too many youngsters see the game as an old man's game; preferring the Yankeeized version of ten pin bowling which does not have the same skill factor as British bowling.

How patronising is it to assume all young guys are 'Buckie Drinkers'
Secondly, what's wrong with somebody that drinks Buckie, if that's the drink of their choice. The young guy next door to me, in employment, married father of two, good neighbour and good guy, drinks Buckie, because that's what he likes.
The bowling club you were at caltondefender are getting it wrong on so many levels, and yes, you're probably right....they wont survive.

My niece's husband who is just in his 30's plays bowls and has done for years, I don't really know anything about bowls but I know he has loads of trophies and has won the championship (if that's what you call it) a few years running so he must be good at the game.

I was a member of Springboig Bowling Club from 1973 until I emigrated in 1978,I was twenty six when I joined and I can remember there were a few of us in our twenties at that time,I thought that was going to be the way of the future for the clubs back then because when we played at other clubs we saw younger players there as well,it sounds as if things have gone into reverse.

My husband was in his 30's when he took up bowls, my son, who was 11 at the time, used to go along with him and took an interest in the game. The bowlers used to encourage my son to join in. By the time he was 14, he was playing for their club and won loads of trophies. He played in the Surrey Championship League against another teenager called Nigel Smith and beat him more than once. My son gave up bowls by the time he was 17, Nigel Smith went on to become the youngest English Bowling Champion in 1991.

Sadly James Springboig is one of the clubs which are on the verge of being disbanded sooner rather later. The woman who runs the place is a very good friend of mine and she keeps me up to date with what is happening there on a regular basis. Their membership has reached an all time low and the membership they have seem to be using other venues rather than supporting their own club. Belvidere is another example of lack of interest...the recently built Belvidere Village on our doorstep has so far only provided us with four new members despite being the only pub/club between Belvidere and the nearest pub the Clanny.

It's such a shame Charlie, it used to be such a popular game but bowling clubs everywhere are suffering now...do you think it might be because us auld codgers are more interested in the internet than going out in the fresh air to take up a sporting hobby? ;D

The End For Bowls....... Bowling greens in the capital face being turned into tennis courts it emerged last night, Council chiefs in Edinburgh said users numbers at its 5 greens have plummeted by up to Two Thirds since 2007... They are now considreing closing the sleepy venues & converting them into to cater for more popular sports.Ex-world bowls champions David McGill warned we are looking at the extinction of the game. But a council spokesman said "We are aiming to provide a better match between sports facilities and the needs of local communities
