A scene of Rowchester street note the tramlines which used to gain access to and from the old Whitevale caur depot... The tram depot at Rowchester Street stood at numbers 25 to 39, and was built in 1893 for the Glasgow Corporation Tramway Department and was widely known as the Whitevale Depot

Camlachie School railings can be seen on the rh side, and above the row of shops, the inevitable pawn shop.
On the lh side where the tram is, would be the present location of Society Street / Dunrobin Street.

I would imagine you are right, although I'd imagine that Charlie and/or Peter would know for sure. Could well have been the sight of the east gate into the city in past times.

You've just about nailed it asbo.
It was the eastern 'gait' of the city and did lead to where the gallows were sited. Where the meat market stands was known as the lands of Gallowmuir.

Is it jist me or does everyone else think that Glasgow is jist overflowing in historic curiosity. Seems tae me that almost every street name has an interesting background story. I have always loved history but have jist recently looking into my own and I never get fed up hearing about how Glasgow came to be what it is today. A big thanks to Charlie for this site

the pub was named the mill inn after the mill at the other end of holywell st behind the creamery, to access the mill you had to go through the creamery yard. when it was demolished, the cooperage used it to store their barrels. we played round there when we were kids when the prefab's were still there.

Tearlach, have a wee look at the wall between the hamilton accies and the bellgrove hotel, there is an old sign on it for the ANNFIELD HALLS 669 or 689 gallowgate, it's quite faded and it looks pretty old.

The chimney in the background is that of the Crown Fireclay Works in Millerston Street. What a beautifully ornate building to the fore.

I remember the area in the photo, I'm sure that at the bottom of that beautiful ornate building on the corner was a chemist .It had a bevelled glass front that went in at an l -shape and a marble pillar at the corner ,as children we would get chased if we cut through it,even then I remember thinking it was beautiful

So what street was that building on Peter...other than the Gallowgate and was there a name for it. I think it is the corner of Slatefield Street and Gallowgate. Coming from Camlachie the sequence of streets would have been Millerston, Bluevale, Whitevale and Slatefield Street. I think the single storey building next to the ornate one would have been at the corner of Whitevale Street.

Yes I was sure it was Whitevale St corner. Does anyone remember David St, across the street and round the corner , along the street was David St chapel I remember the priest was arrested a few times for being drunk, shouting in the closes and banging doors about there not being enough money in the plate, it even made the daily record , I don't remember his name, we went to mass there a few times to watch him get agitated

My mistake just remembered the chapel was St Nicolaus not St David When did you go to Mass there scout and what was the priest's name...and had he been there for a long time. I know that my family had a run in with a priest from St.Nicholas's and I am just trying to put a name to the event.
