At the extreme right of the photo we can see the front wheels of a car, possibly the Austin A40 which belonged to Miss Muir, headmistress of Camlachie Primary School. Arch Street is in the foreground with MacLeans pub to the fore, a small part of the Cartwheel lounge remains. Also looks like a Tunnochs lorry has just made a delivery to Cochrane's at number 1047 Gallowgate. Just off the picture in the very bottom right hand side was Lachie's shop, a favourite with school pupils for sweeties or the penny tray at dinner time.

Yes, Wonderful photo. Thee was also Frank's chip shop,Wright's the dairy ,who sold the best candy toffee aples on the planet; My grandmother would wait at the school railings at playtime and give me a big candy apple from the shop; Jim Lamb a friend lived in the last close next to Cochranes's. He used to deliver the papers for the newsagent a few shops down. Amethyst

Jimmy I remember the trains running there and we used to steal the fog alarms off the rails...that is what we called them at the time but I am sure the must've been something else like detonators.

We ( Rangers supporters ) were ambushed leaving Celtic Park circa 1962 with the enemy pelting us with bottles , bricks and proddie weans, from a bridge.
Would this have been the Bridge ??

Hi Norrie, Remember when you got me to clean up an old photo of Yate St. (see below), well this is looking north, the railway would be on the right and the last building on the left (with the clock tower) we knew as the lamp lighters building as they worked from out of there. On the map below, the lamp lighters building I have marked in Blue and the railway bridge I have marked in Yellow. I hope this helps. Regards, Brian.

Did they take the railway lines up? We girls (and boys) from the prefabs Janefield used to play there daring all to climb the pylon. The wild flowers that used to grow there were wonderful when we girls were playing house etc . When the boys were there we played what was it? Kiss, Catch or Torture? or Statues or tig. or hide and seek. and with all the dogs running around you sometimes found something you really didn't want to !! Those were the days>> Thanks for the Memories Linda gallowgategirl
