I have a number of grandparents and great-grandparents buried in Riddrie. A few years ago there was a real horrific accident when a hole opened up in the earth after a big downpour and a guy who was walking his dog was swept into the hole and killed. Part of the graveyard was fenced off and warning notices erected. It was still there a few years later - can anybody tell me if t has been re-opened or not?

Part of it is still fenced off...the boy who fell down the old mine shaft was the son of the graveyard supervisor if I remember correctly and he had just took the dog out for a walk when an old shaft opened up and he and his dog both fell down it and they were both drowned.

I think you may be right. It did seem quite long afterwards before the body was recovered.

I was just going to post what charlie said,I love going up to graveyards ,I know people think its a bit morbid ,but I enjoy reading headstones .My parents are buried in Riddrie cemetery right up near the back wall on the Robroyston road, when i go up I usually spend a wee bit of time sorting up any badly looking graves. Its maybe not safe in this day and age for woman to go wandering round cememtries but if anyone does need a photo of a particular grave or a wee bunch of flowers laid down , maybe a couple of us could go in search of it for a forum member. glasgow district council land services(i think its called) will give you plot number if you give them names and dates etc.

Visited the cemetery today to look for two graves - no luck in either case. How do you go about making enquires with the council to locate a plot - can anybody help? Thanks Asbo, if you don't know the lair numbers, contact Cems and Crems by Phone: 0141 287 3961-4 or on E-mail: land@glasgow.gov.uk, or visit them at 20 Trongate, if you are in Glasgow. Sometimes they are not too busy and are very helpful. Give them the names, approximate dates of death (or age at death) and the cemetery name and they will help you find the lair numbers. It can take up to 8 weeks to get a reply if they can't find them easily and it can work out expensive, as they charge (I think it's either £56 or £76) for any lengthy enquiries. Once you have the lair numbers, find out when the staff will be at the cemetery and they will show you to the lair/s.

My Maternal Grandparents are buried in Riddrie Cemetery. I only went there once with my mum, not long after my grandmother died, but I would only have been about 8yrs old at the time. All I can remember is a railing in front of the grave, which seemed to be at the back of the cemetery. I have no idea of the plot number. Jean

I just found out from City of Glasgow Archives that my great gran and gg gran are buried at Riddrie. I looked at the aerial photo of Riddrie that you can find on Google and it seems like the section they are buried in is still intact. If anyone is strolling out that way and want the challenge of a search (!), I'd be very grateful for a photograph! They are buried in plot G4451 (section G, I presume). Names in question - Catherine Nicholson Grewar and Robina Wilson Grewar McDonald (but may be listed as Hynes). Plus Edward Hynes, who is buried alongside. Catherine died in the 1930s and Robina died in the 1940's (can never remember if it was 1946 or 1942). Thanks! You can contact me at aquarooster at hotmail dot com.

I will be traveling to Glasgow in September - my first trip to Scotland. Family records indicate my great-grandfather, James Greer, is buried in Riddrie Park Cemetery, 27 Lochview Gardens, Glasgow Plot # 3602. He died Feb 21, 1938. His DOB is Feb 28,1869. He was stationed in India from approx 1888 - 1897. I would very much like to visit his grave. In previous visits, neither my mother or my sister were able to locate a grave or even a map of the cemetery. Can anyone tell me where I might find a map or have an idea where his grave might be? I can be contacted at signupred at gmail dot com. Thank you for any assistance!

I have been looking into the records. If you have the day your relative died its easy to find the plot. Also need a name. Normally Mitchel Library is the go but there is another Morman site that has photo copies of all the graves. dancin_2005@yahoo.com.au
