At long long last I have discovered proof that there was prefab houses in Janefield Street at the Camlachie end of Celtic Park. This picture appeared in the Evening Times and sent in by a Mrs Paterson who lived there and had her house decorated for the Queen's Coronation in 1953. ;D As I have said on numerous occasions 'I maybe the village drunk but I am not the village idiot...I am never wrang'. Now I need to track down Mrs Paterson. I remember the prefabs, used to have a pal fae Newlands who lived in one, I remember thinking they looked great when I visited.

I've got maps from the 1950's which clearly show the prefabs. Many of the house numbers mirrored the later close numbers.

You are definately correct Charlie. The pre-fabs were on Janefield Street at the back of Celtic park just before you passed under the railway bridge at Stamford Street. As a kid, I lived in Edmiston Street just up from Janefield Street and I remember a Gypsy man (as we called them then) I think he came from Vinegar hill, would come with a horse and trap and sell rides for thrupence a time (old money). The trap would take about 6 or 8 kids at a time in 2 rows down each side and the run was up and down Janefield St. from Springfield Road to the prefabs and back. It was rerr, you felt as if you were doing about 100mph. with the wind in your hair and everything.
Brian.

When the pre fabs in Janefeld st were emptied , lot of folk from the gallowgate dug up the hedges from there to put in their front gardens, I remember helping my mammy dig them into our garden at 1063 gallowgate where they still grow to thiis day, same for the surrounding streets Society st and Dunrobin st. Thats where the hedges came from! Scout

Hi Brian As to your post here, I too remember the rides on the pony and trap although I don't remember the man being called the gypsy, His name was Jimmy Freer or Jimmy Frail and was a coalman who lived in the last house in Dalriada Street. He also owned lock ups down there and my Dad hired one from him to keep his Red and White Lambretta scooter in - I even remember the registration number VGB 255 !! I too remember the prefabs, they always look clean and fresh to me. Another memory I have is of the cooperage which was under the bridge at the end of Janefield Street. It always had its own smell which I can recall even today! Joe You are definately correct Charlie. I remember the pony & trap as well. About once or twice in the summer time he used to come into Mc Ewan Street and take us all down Burgher St along Dechmont St and then back up Helenvale St for our trip. Great Days.

A classmate took me into his prefab home, sometime around 1950, to see their fridge. Modern day wonder for us. Had never even heard of a fridge. They were great wee houses, I think, but suffered badly from condensation. Davie.

Mick McGran and so on oh and myself Linda Conner.Delia,Frank and I went to Rivvie 1954-1959 circa . Thankyou for the picture as part of my life back then was in upheaval and I lost a lot of my possessions. Love the site Hope I am doing this right regards Linda
