Cul-de-sac off 1253 Gallowgate, but no longer exists. Part of the street was previously known as Bella Place.
In 1904 J H Kelly & Co., built a van works, hence the name of the street. The works were later taken over by William Beardmore & Co.

no 5 van st is where my firm was where i started as an apprentice brickie and used tae come out the back gates tae go tae the shops at duke street the firm ran right along the gallowgate to barrs depot where they parked the lorries opposite the graveyard, refractory services a big steel works that made chimneys. for blast furnaces. if ye looked over the wall into beardmores ye,d see the moulton metal bewing poured. it was amazing tae see the orange glow of the metal getting poured like a liquid. ;D

Hi Appreciate this is an old thread, but my ma and aunt were talking about Van St the other night and said it was named after a Lady Van - anyone know anything about this? Is it just myth...? Muso
