World War One, At Nitshill railway station, there is a memorial to Sergeant, Meikle V.C. M.M the hero of Nitshill during the 1914-18 War. He had been a clerk at the station and joined the army at the age of 16. In July 1918,when he was still under 20 year old, he led an attack on a German machine gun post in the trenches of France, armed only with a pistol and a branch of wood. He was killed in action and posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross the highest military award in the British Army.
