He cut my hair short with a side Parting. We were " Moonies " and all the Moonies from the Palais went also. He stood on a box. He told us he sent a fotie of his Brother ( who was no oil painting ) to the girl in Italy he married Fond memories.

Got my hair cut a few times in Johnnie's shop next to the Bellgrove Hotel in the early 1980's...cost me the grand total of 50p if I remember correctly.

You didn't just get a haircut at Wee Johnnie's...............it was pure theatre.
Tony Roper could probably match his work 'The Steamie' if he based a play on Ionta's.
The place was full of characters and great patter, and a real east end institution.

Yes Peter, you seldom got out in under 2 hours.
There was always about 20 guys waiting when you went in . most waiting for Johnny. His Brother did not seem to mind.
The Patter was brilliant and you could nip out for a Pint and return to your place in the que !!
Great foties Calamity.

Weren't there three brothers? Johnny, Danny and Tommy. Sometimes I'd let a few guys behind me get served (?) just so's I'd stay a bit longer. One night Johnny asked me if I thought I was in a bed and breakfast. That was over 50years ago, and I still remember the place. He must have moved, cause it was on the opposite side of the Gallowgate from the Bellgrove Hotel.
Davie.

Everyone remembers Johnnie Ionta's but does anyone remember the Italian Hairdressers which was at 638 Gallowgate between Cubie Street and Soho Street...it seems that the shop was owned by my daughter in law's family.

It was ninepence for a haircut in 1964, and besides Johnny handing out Woodbine cigarettes you would also get tap dancers, singers and storytellers, and yes he stood on an orange box, it was magic.

It always took around two hours because the shop was always crowded, and you never knew if they were all there to get their haircut or just because of the patter. There were other great Italian owned barbers and ice cream shops, and fish and chip shops in Dennistoun and Bridgeton then the Rendezvous on Duke St, was a great cafe ice cream parlour and because my father was a postman there, they gave us huge cones for fourpence. Viva Italia!
