The Last of the Clan So what do you think were they inevitable or was it an act of genocide by a centralised Government who wanted to breakdown the last bastion of Jacobitism in the British Isles. Was there bigger battles to be fought and won in Europe , Canada and the New World that warranted the harshness of crushing these rebellious Scots.

the clearances were carried out by the landowners to make way for sheep. some clan chiefs also cleared out their clansman, they didn't need them to fight for them anymore and they could get more money letting land to lowland sheep farmers. thousands were shipped out to foreign lands against their will.

Sadly Holywell37 there are many , many Scots who cannot admit that many of the clan cheiftains sold their people out...and as per usual they still blame the English. Admitedly there was some English influence in some land clearances but at the end of the day the Scots clan cheifs have a lot to be ashamed of...none more so than some of the cadet families of my own Clan, especially the Glengarry branch of the Cland Donald.

For some reason my ancestors stayed on the island of Coll in the 1850's when most of the islanders were being transported to New Zealand...

I always find it very upsetting when I read or hear about the Highland clearances its such a tragic part of history and I can see all these people being slain.

vistied Badbea, felt quite emotional to think of the poor souls and their families transported to such a bleak cold place. I've been to Badbea a couple of times and it's a sad reminder of the people who lived there before they headed for New Zealand. Some years ago, one of their descendants came back to visit and paid for a memorial to his ancestors to be built. You can still see the remnants of all the crofts and it's sad to think of a whole wee community all having to up-sticks and head to the other side of the world because of their chief's greed.
