Parkhead Comminity Fire Station Cuthelton Street Glasgow December 1952---March 2011
When Parkhead fire station opened it allowed the old war time temporary Tollcross Fire Station, which was in a portion of the Miners Welfare Institute at 43 Corbett street to close. When the station opened in 1952 it was the first fire station in Scotland to be built without housing above the station, housing that was allocated to serving firefighters (although the men were not allowed to serve in the station where they lived). The station was designed with all necessary services for independent operation. It contained a three-bay appliance room, set back at an angle at the junction of four roads, this situation giving appliance drivers a clear field of view in all directions as they leave the station. And also offers offices ,dormitories, billiard and quiet rooms, recreation room dinning rooms kitchen ete. Engine repair, machineand paint shops with subsidiary buildings containing plumbers and joiners shops together with a hose tower and heating chamber. Taken from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Brochure

Tam, I lived with my granny Doc in Corbett st next to the welfare building that was used as the fire station although they had moved before my time, but the new station was at the top of Canmore street where my great granny stayed and I was over there every lunchtime from Quarrybrae so was used to the fire engines sirens everyday.Quarrybrae also took us on a tour of Parkhead fire station. One of my daddy's pals was stationed in Parkhead and he also took us round the station.

I remember walking past it everyday on my way to School, and on my way home from School. [Quarry Brae]
