An alarming fire broke out on Thursday morning in the stables and garage at 74 James street Bridgeton. Belonging to James Simpson ,funeral undertakers. The outbreak was discovered at an early hour ,but by the time the fire brigade arrived although they were promptly on the scene , the fire had obtained a firm hold , The premises which are mainly of wood contained straw and fodder that burned fiercely.A large number of horses were trapped in the building but dispite heroic attempts on the part of the firemen engaged, twenty-six horses perished in the conflagration . A number of motor cars were also destroyed. Some inconvenience was caused on the James Street yellow car route as the street was closed for all traffic. The damage which is reported to be covered by insurance is estimated at £20,000 1926 ,

Sadly Beth two horses were killed during the race. However, I am not advocating that we cancel horse racing because of it - still sad nevertheless.
