Stood at number 7 Millerston Street, opened in 1921 to a design by Charles McNair, with a seating capacity of 1250. Badly damaged by fire on 17th February 1949. Closed as a cinema around 1965 and later used as a bingo hall. Demolished in 1987.
Round the corner on Duke Street stood Coia's Cafe. It was not uncommon for cafes or confectioners to be located at or near a cinema, so the picture goers could buy their sweets.
As cinemas declined and were demolished, so to did confectionery manufacturers suffer, with companies such as Birrell's, Milady and Edward Mackenzie Ltd. ceasing to trade.
My mother worked in McLintock's confectionery works in McNeill Street in the Gorbals, and got a telling off for putting too much in the Lucky Bags.
