Well folks at the risk of giving myself a coronary we battled through this morning despite the wind and rain and other wee trials and tribulations which are sent to test us on such occasions...but we got there in the end. A good turn out of several hundred locals and a deputation from the Royal Highland Fusilier Veterans courtesy of our Blue Ron and friends. Members of the Gordon Highlanders 1914/18 Living History Group plus local MSP Frank McAveety , Counclillors George Redmond and Alison Thewliss , local schooldren and the Bridgeton Cross VC Group and not forgetting Me.

Well done Charlie, and everyone involved in the organizing of the Bridgeton service of remembrance. These things do not "just happen", they take a lot of time and effort by dedicated people, often beavering away unseen in the background. You and the 'team' were tremendous 'hosts' yesterday and the hot teas and soup, in addition to the buffet and 'other' refreshments were gratefully received by my comrades in the library. As I told you yesterday, our RHF veterans group will be back next year, along with our Regimental comrades in the HLI association to swell our ranks. I have taken the liberty to 'lift' three of your photographs to accompany my report on my Regimental forum so that my members who could not be there yesterday can see for themselves. I of course 'credited' the pictures to the Glasgow Keelies site. The photographs are smashing Charlie and I hope we can have an even bigger turnout next year, the occasion certainly warrants it. The wee Cameronian chap who was standing on his own, looking a bit forlorn, cheered up when I asked him if he would like to join in with our RHF veterans, he was fair chuffed with that. His Regiment may be no more but the Scottish Division will never forget our former comrades in arms. aye Ronnie

Whilst it is nice to see one's name in the papers other than the Obituary Column AndyMo the accolade really belongs to the Bridgeton Cross VC group of which I am a member. However, the biggest compliment was when Father Dunn from Sacred Heart came up to me after the Service and shook my hand and congratulated me for all my efforts...nothing unusual in that but when one considers it was done right underneath the Umbrella at Brigton Cross it makes it all the more significant. Mind you I hope that no one captured it on film as I have my reputation of being 'a Bigot' to worry about and maintain. ;D Ach well what is it they say...Judge not a man by his words, but by his actions

There's a nice wee photo in today's Evening Times, showing a woman sitting on the steps of the Olympia with Bridgeton Cross in the background, from 1967.
Mibbees Tam could do a then and now photo, and I'm sure Carol or Irene wouldn't mind completing the scene ??

To be honest Alice I am still rather amused at the very idea of it. It must rank as one of the funniest moments of my 'Great War' experiences. Ranks up there with the time the wee wumman fae Camslang almost drowned me with Holy Water at The Thiepval Memorial To The Missing on The Somme a few years ago. My son Iain still says "the look on yer face Da was the funniest thing I ever witnessed". ;D Strange the way things work out I have promised Father Dunn that I will write a wee story about a piece of coloured glass salvaged from the rubble of Beaumont-Hamel Chapel during the war with an image of the Virgin Mary on it for the Parish newsletter. Do you think I am being converted or whit or simply mellowing with age.

Well, looks like you and father dunn might get to be pals - why not give it a try. My own Dad would often say 'Thats it Mary am going tae the Sacred Heart Chapel wi you on Sunday ah really think am ready fur turnin' 'Aye right!" mammy wid shout 'Tell me when yur sober!! ;D ;D I have a couple of wee stories about holy water too, both true - will put them on laterDo you know I've just realised I must be addicted to facebook, I was looking for the "like" button on this post ;D Back on thread.......... There has been so much bad publicity this year regarding a minority of football fans making a fuss about the poppy and Remembrance Day that it is so heartwarming to see people of different faiths paying their respects in this way. My own office of over 250 staff had a two minute silence which was impeccably observed.
