Backrow according to the Covenanter Encyclopedia by Dane Love. Following the Battle of Drumclog the Covenanters decided to attack the homes of the Royalist supporters in Glasgow. On 2 June 1679 Sir Robert Hamilton led the men towards Glasgow, which had by this time closed the gates to the city, and erected roadblocks. The Covenanters divided into two, one group attacking the Gallowgate, the other heading for the top end of the city.Unfortunately for them, they did not carryout the double-edged attack at the same time, allowing the city residents time to fend off the Gallowgate attack before regrouping and fighting the attack at the cathedral end of the city. It is thought tha seven Covenanters were killed in the attack whereas no Glaswegians were killed. PS According to legend the Royalists would not allow the Covenanters to retrieve their dead and they were left for the stray dogs of the city to feast upon. That's the Gallowgait for ye...nuthin ever changes does it Backrow.
