Charlie, wisnae sure where to put this so move/remove if you want.
I was at my dads this morning and out of the blue he announces this is V.E. day!
I knew this and started asking him about it.
His regiment (HLI) were just outside Hamburg when it was announced.
They were waiting for the order to march into Hamburg when the powers that be sent a fleet of lorries to take them onto Lubek (hope this is correct spelling) in eastern germany - political decision as they wanted to take Lubek before the Russians.
My da was also telling me the people of Lubek were very grateful that the British got there first before the Russians.
Sitting watching him this morning you could tell that he was reminiscing about it all....

Uncanny that you should post this Billy as I was searching the other day on the internet for a photo re the Russians planting a flag on top of the Reich stag in reply to Trotsky's comments to me. However I was linked into a story which dealt with the rape of millions of German women by the advancing Russian Army which churned my stomach. Young lassies including babies of three and four were raped by these bar studs and many women raped in front of their families. They even raped the Polish and Russian women they freed from the concentration camps and we are not talking of rape on a one to one basis but possibly thirty or forty or more on one woman or child. Between the end of the war and 1948 there were millions of back street abortions on German women because of these so called liberators...is it any wonder that the Germans surrendered to the Allies en-masse rather than fall into the hands of the Russians. On my travels in Europe over the last 20 years I have always been treated well by the citizens of the occupied countries of Belgium , France and Holland plus Germany when they realise I am Scots or British and fly the Union Flag with pride from our car or mini-bus. Yet back here we have so called Republican and Nationalist scum bags who refer to the Union Flag/Jack as the 'Butcher's Apron'. It is the flag of Freedom and if anyone doesn't like it they should crawl back under the brick that they crept out of in the first place.

Thanks Charlie never heard of the Union Jack referred to as that. Always thought of the Brits as representing Freedom, where did the Butcher ref come from?. As I have told you often, I am ashamed of my lack of historical knowledge. At High school we had to choose between French and History and I chose French. Now all these years later I have never spoken a word of it since school, but we live with history, are both proud and sometimes ashamed of it, as I am in these times in South Africa
