I can still vividly remember going over tae the Steamie in 'the Brickfield' wi' ma maw oan steamie day wi' the auld wheelie , the zinc bath loaded full of durty washing , the washing-board and the oil-skin apron tied to the top the bath and the smell of carbolic soap...my God how many women suffered over the years working away all day in those damp and steamy conditions.

Somebody should write a musical play about it...........sorry, Tony Roper's already done that. !!!!!

Your right Jackie there was a wee swing park in Barrowfield stuck between Fielden St, McArthur Street, Frazer Street and Law Street...played in there many a time until I became a teenager then it became a no go area because the Spur took a dislike to us Arrol Place boys after we stole all their booty out of an auld wash-house in the 'big Breezy' back after they had screwed Therea's Dairy next to the The Ship.

I was always sent tae get a turn at Parkhead Steamie in Tollcross Rd, next to the library, usually before I went to school. Although there were times I had tae go tae Barrowfield.

The photo looked so different than what i remember. My last bath there was Feb 1973 on a Friday night before my darling sister got married at Martha Street.
