Watched this programme the other night as I missed it the first time around and to be quite honest I was flabbergasted as I have never heard of the claims made by either James Hunter or Duncan Murchison - renowned authors and historians. Now I have read Culloden several times since it was first published and I cannot remember even Prebble making these claims in his book which was considered controversial when it first came out.The words ethnic cleansing and claims of 30,000 to 40,000 men , women and children massacred over a period of five years from that fateful day at Culloden when the Clan system was crushed by the Government troops ...which consisted not only of Lowland Scots wearing trews but the hairy-arsed ones as well from the Highlands...seems a wee bit far fetched by my reckoning. There was also the bit were John Michie even described Bonnie Prince Charlie as one of Scotland's greatest National heroes as a son of the Gael I think he was a total disaster for the Highlands along with the rest of his breed the Stuarts. But there again I might be wrang again. Even old King Billy came in for a fair bit of ear bashing for the Massacre of Glencoe and signing that infamous order ' to put all to the sword under 70'...seems the Irish aren't the only ones who can write revionist history or is it just the trait of the Celts to rewrite everything to suit themselves. www2.stv.tv/tv/highlands/episode_synopsis/John_begins_his_journey_at_Fort_Georgex_080502173045258

Reading a book on The Clearances at the moment and it has only confirmed what I already knew some of our Highland chiefs should've have been hung for the way they neglected their kinsmen...some of the branches of my own clan were the worse offenders.
