"The village of Kirkoswald is located 4 miles south-west of Maybole. It is well known as the village where Robert Burns attended school with Maybole notable William Niven. It is also here that we find the cottage of Souter Johnnie in which the 18th-century life of a cobbler is presented. Buried in the Kirkoswald churchyard are John Davidson and Douglas Graham, memorialised as Souter Johnnie and Tam o' Shanter in the poem of Robert Burns. Click here for maps . For pleasures are like poppies spread You sieze the flower . The bloom is dead Or like a snow flake on the river A moment white, then gone forever. Agreed GG, that is some women but happily very few.!

I agree Peter. My own wee favourite bit . Wrote it last night when I returned from the Football. Have duly corrected to read Bloom instead of Seed

The final verse of Hollie Willies Prayer.
But, Lord, remember me an' mine Wi' mercies temporal and divine, That I for grace an' gear may shine, Excell'd by nane, And a' the glory shall be Thine, Amen, Amen!
Epitaph on Holy Willie.
So true, we all know a Holy Willie !!
A clever man was our Rabbie ?

great historical place wiz particulary taken by the Covenanters history in the Dumfries and Galloway area. Ah like Burns, canny always understaun every word, but what a deep thinker and a true man of the people, ah bit of an early Socialist Been watching some of the news lead ups to the Burns celebrations and once again we are treated to visions of hairy arsed highlanders dressed in kilts and all the trappings of a culture which was pretty alien to Burns. At the end of the day Rabbie was a Lowland Presbyterian Scot but this does not seem to be reflected in his modern day image by the media who have so far stopped short of sticking a kilt on him. The early Socialist label Nell has also been stuck on Christ by many others...not too sure about Jesus but Burn's poetry and thoughts are more Masonic based than any political ethos mind you it was often argued that the early Socialists like Keir Hardie and Red Clydesiders like Maxton,MacLean and Co. looked to the Covenanters for their spiritual guidance and thoughts. So considering how much influence the Church had on the people of Burns's generation it could be argued that he also was well taught in the early political and religious teachings of the Covenanters especially where one considers were he was born and where he lived all of his life...and as you already stated Ayrshire , Dumfries and Galloway were without doubt and still are in many cases Covenanting strongholds.

On 3rd July wrongly diagnosed as "Flying Gout" by his friend Dr Maxwell and recommended sea bathing as a cure Burns, barely able to stand, went to Brow Well which had a reputation as a Spa. Each day he waded out shoulder deep into the cold sea water. This only made his condition worse. during the following week the Solway tides were not suitable for bathing so on the 18th July he returned home to Dumfries. On Thursday 21st of July he became delerious and died. I was there yesterday. Photos to follow. Ixus 2
