Charlie, feckin magic. I see my old house on the first photie, and its just the way I remember it.
Widny mind a copy.
The close you can see on the internal corner was mine. It was 149 Janefield Street, our house was the one on the extreme top left you can see, that fronts on to Janefield Street itself. Directly below us was the Ferguson family, whose son Ian, went on to play for Rangers.
When the block was almost derelict prior to demolition in 1997, I went down to Janefield Street and took the number '149' off the wall.
I still have it to this day. A treasured wee reminder of a chapter in my life I like to refer to as 'The Wonder Years'

Peter,do you remember a man called Jimmy that lived in the close. He was a street sweeper and lived with an elderly lady. He always wore a bunnet. He had no home and the lady took him in to her house.I am trying to remember her name.

I can remember vividly delivering their newspaper on the day of the moon landings, and they didn't even know it had happened, which amazed me then, and still does. That house was in the square with the even numbers and was three stairs up. Tilly and Jimmy later got a ground floor house, across the street at number 153.

Thank you Peter for answering and explaining. When they lived in the square would that have been in the middle close ? If it is the close I am thinking I remember the Collins family that lived also top flat,or perhaps I am in the wrong close.

Morto would it be the considine family Mr considine that would deliver the late night papers. They lived low down in the first close as you left the square going to the cooperage. But i am not sure.

Yes it was. Sadly Audrey died around 18 months ago.
The houses at the Camlachie end of Janefiels Street were built in late 1964 and it was a marvellous wee 'community', with people coming from many parts of Glasgow into brand new houses.
Many of us had never experienced anything like it, a house with an inside bathroom, two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. Some of the people even formed a tenants association, which wee Joe McLaren was the leading light in.
Around 1966/7 there was a terrible fire in Carntyne in which many members of the same family perished. One of our Janefield Street neighbours, Aggie Belshaw was related to this sad family, and took in young Iain Cameron. I believe the funeral left from Janefield Street, and photographs of the event were in the newspapers.

Hi Henrietta,
Iain Cameron now lives in America. One of my old 'Janey' pals John McDonald met him over there a few years ago.
I know all the Belshaws (Shaw, Bobby & Andy). I met Bobby at Hamilton Races last year and we spoke about Audrey Collins.
