Did anyone see the BBC 2 programme last night Secret History and based on Duke Street? There was some old film footage shown from the 70s I think. I enjoyed the programme, remembering Whitevale Baths where I learned to swim (Tommy Bell pushed me in at the deep end so I soon learned!!! ). They also showed the Post Office just down from Parkhead Cross. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2014/aug/02/secret-history-streets

What a success! A fantastic setting on a wonderful night, I think they did Glasgow proud. There was one annoying thing for me, Hazel Irvine kept saying that Celtic Park was in Dalmarnock!!! I was brought up in Palace Street in the shadow of Celtic Park which was in Glasgow E1 - Parkhead. It is a long time since I lived there - 1958 to be precise but it has always been Parkhead to me. Was she getting mixed up with the Sir Chris Hoy stadium which may be classed as being in Dalmarnock? I dont know. Surely this St Andrews daughter and sports person should have known better, as a sports reporter she must have used Parkhead instead of Celtic Park? Ach well , maybe I am being a wee bit pedantic as it was a great night for Glasgow and a great advert for the city, it certainly made me proud.

My God I am feeling ancient ... 50 years ago this Friday JFK was assassinated and I remember it well. Me too Charlie - I was 16 having just left school in May / June that year and started working for Donaldson & Filers just off Pollockshaws Road at nether Auldhouse Road, there was a works 'do' that night as an office Christmas party. I was a bit pissed and left the do around midnight. At the corner of Pollockshaws Road and Queens Drive, I bought a morning paper and couldnt believe the headlines about Kennedy's death. There were no buses at that time of night and I had to walk from there all the way back to Castlemilk - I am pretty sure I was fairly sober by the time I got in!

Aye good luck wi the fitness Charlie but I seem to remember in Westhorne Park there was an athletics oval field and the grit running track was used by cyclists but the unusual thing I remember was that the bikes they used had wooden "tyres". Anyone remember that?
I also seem to remember the shows coming to the park once a year and to the sperr grun next to the Black Cat in the 1950s.

Just remembered something about Springfield Road in the 50s. They were doing some roadworks on either side of the road between Edminson St and Malcolm St but the thing I remember was near the tram stop and Henderson's the butcher and the Coop, they had excavated a tunnel under the tramlines from one side of the road to the other and typically for us kids was running back and forwards through the tunnel at night after the workmen had gone home. Happy days! ;D

Charlie
Did you see BBC Four earlier this week, Dec 6th ? There was an hour long programme on the trams in the UK. Glasgow did feature but not as much as I would have liked, however, the No 9 to Bridgeton and again to Partick did feature and Bridgeton Cross did too for a small clip for the last tram

Next door tae ma Granny in two up 16 Palace Street in the 40s & 50s (& 60s ah think) was Mr & Mrs Wylie. They had a daughter Betty who married Bert Leishman and they had a daughter Ann. In the late 40s /early 50s they emigrated tae Canada and had a son Billy but returned to Glasgow when Bert was killed (in a car accident?) Betty, Ann and Billy moved into Edmiston Street on their return. Ann (Leishman) must have gone to Newlands then Rivvie - maybe some of the other keelies remember her. I think Billy was at Newlands when I left Palace Street in 1958.

The women in the fish shop used to wear wooden clogs as they were tramping through ice, i think they had the fish in a trough affair, a friend o' ma mothers worked there Peggy McGilvary. Alex Creamers was a great wee shop we used to go wi ma Granda on a Seterday and he would buy us a toy. The Dr. I remember was called Dr. Gracie. Mamie, I think the fish shop opposite Edminston Street was called Jean's or she was the woman who ran it / owned it. I found a gold(ish) watch in there once and she handed it into the polis - I had to wait 6 months until nobody claimed it and it was returned to me, only to find out that the strap links were broken and it was really a cheap watch ;D

Tam You dont give a date for the pic but if your brother is third from the left on the second bottom row then the guy next to him second from the left looks like Ronnie Davidson who lived down the stairs from me in 4 Palace Street, he is next to the guy wearing a beret. I left there in 1958 for Chateau du lait. Ronnie is ages with me - born late 46 or early 47 like me. This was taken around 1954 and Ronnie is on the left here sitting

There is of course the King's Shilling for those who volunteered but maybe one of the others on here can help - that's about all I could find.

That's Real out now but I agree with Mourino - they got stuffed by rank bad refereeing, the sending off in the first match was a disgrace and changed the game ( however in anybody's mind Messi's second goal was worth the entrance money / Sky payments) another disgrace in last night's match was disallowing a goal for Real. I know that FIFA and UEFA are both corrupt and between Platini and Blatter they have stitched up the beautiful game. I just hope the final is a clean game and much to my dismay, Man U stuff 'em.

Rangers 2 Celtic 1 (a.e.t.)
Lets hear it for the Gers ;D naebdy gave us a chance and we won fair and square. The EHD booking (less than 2 mins after he came on as a sub) was a disgrace when you consider Loovens committed four consecutive fouls (three on Weiss) and wasnt even spoken to. However, the effort put in by our "scratch" team was enormous for this more than deserved win. ;D
Happy to be blue ;D

Ma Grannie ( Bessie Bell) an ma Auntie Jeannie (Jackson) both went there, definitely in the 50s. Ah'll ask ma Maw the night aboot it, in case she can remember anything an get back tae ye.
Later:
asked ma maw an she did go to the Bethany Halls wi ma Grannie an ma Auntie Jeannie, her memories were that there were so many poor people there, but then again as she says "we were all very poor son"
kinda puts it into perspective.

David Cant find all that much about him - see here:- www.goring1941.freeserve.co.uk/beard01.htmlWilliam's father, also William, was the first born (baptised 1 May 1825, Greenwich) of Joseph (c. 1799 - 14 May 1872) and Ann (c.1803 - 7 Apr 1873). Joseph was first Superintendent of the Deptford Works of the General Steam Navigation Co. William senior was apprenticed to his father about 1838 and later became his assistant. While at Deptford he devised a new furnace box that reduced the smoke produced by river steamers. His inventiveness brought him into contact with James Napier, marine engineer and son of Robert, and his brother-in-law William Rigby, manager of Robert Napier's Parkhead Forge in east Glasgow. In due course these two Williams co-operated on the development of marine engines and became partners in the forge after Rigby purchased it from Napier in 1861. www.gracesguide.co.uk/wiki/William_Beardmore_and_CoThe company was active between about 1890 and 1930 and at its peak employed about 40,000 people. It was founded and owned by William Beardmore, later Lord Invernairn, after whom the Beardmore Glacier was named. 1835 Robert Napier the 'father' of the shipbuilding on the Clyde purchased a forge at Parkhead. He later acquired a yard a Govan and commenced shipbuilding there in the 1840s. 1868 Robert Napier retired and William Rigby, his son-in-law, took over the Parkhead Forge. Around this time William Beardmore went in to partnership with William Rigby. On the retirement of William Rigby, Isaac Beardmore the brother of William became a partner and the company as called W. and I. Beardmore. 1886 William the son of William Beardmore took sole charge of the business. Initially the company operated a steelworks and gun arsenal at Parkhead, in the east end of Glasgow. This was the most profitable part of the company and was the last part to be disposed of after the death of Lord Invernairn in 1936. 1900 They purchased the Dalmuir works for the building of warships and ordnance. Just for info, my Mother and Aunt Pearl both worked in Beardmore's during the war. Hope that helps a wee bit Joe

Waverley
Thanks for reminding me there about Charlie Hill, I was in the same ward as him in the Royal Infirmary after one of his fights. He was a lovely bloke and always had time for a chat with me even though I was only 7 . He was also a bit of a character and had a nice manner with everybody in the ward. I had had an accident in the Helenvale Swing park and needed a load of stiches in my knee and was in there for about 10 days, he was there for the whole time I was there. I think Charlie had won his fight but also had taken a bit of a doin'. Sad to know he died in July this year in Brisbane Australia aged 80.

Seeing the crash fotie at Brigton Cross this morning reminded me of a tram crash at Parkhead Cross / Springfield Road in the late 50s.
It was a Cornation type tram that jumped the points on a Saturday night (I think), I remember my Da taking me up to the top of Springy Road on the Sunday morning and the tram was still lying on its side with the debris still there, I saw purses, broken specs and shoes there and broken glass everywhere.
Any foties anybdy?
