Prior to my Old Parkhead book being published some 12 years ago or more Asbo the only reference work on the history of Parkhead was by David Willox who wrote "Reminiscences of Parkhead, it's People and Pastimes"...there is a photostat copy in Parkhead Library if you ask for the Parkhead History Box behind the counter.

In his book Willox mentions one storey buildings in Burgher Street which were used as family homes upstairs and a hand loom room at street level or at the back which were rented out to various family members. There is also a story I have somewhere about two local characters a husband and wife known as 'Orange Bob' and 'Papish Mary' I will look it out and print it as I am sure they mentions the cottages in and around Burgher Street.

Just did a wee bit of digging on the building in the photie.
On the 1913 Valuation Roll :
No. 55 was owned by by James McEwan, property owner who gave his name to the nearby street. The tenants were ; John Shearer : labourer George Robertson : labourer
No. 57 was owned by John Brownlie of 83 Elba Lane and the tenants were ; William Hamilton : bottler William Muir : no occupation listed John McDonald : labourer
No. 59 was another Brownlie property with a Mrs Mary Barrowman the tenant.
The property factors were Dansken & Fletcher, a well known firm in the Parkhead area.

Burgher Street was a road of small one to three storey cottages and houses, many of them having hand-loom weaving shops on the ground floor with the living quarters above. At the foot of the street there stood two one-storey white washed cottages. They stood alone as Dechmont Street was them a grass field.
In one of these cottages lived a middle-aged couple who were well known in Parkhead. They were respectable people, but peculiar in their ways. The man was known by the nickname "Orange Bob" and his wife's sobriquet was " Papish Mary".
The following story of this couple is authentic. A few days before a certain 12th of July Bob painted the door and window shutters of the cottage a beautiful orange colour. (Almost all the cottages in Parkhead had shutters on the lower windows, which could be closed and barred at night.) The feelings of his better half could be imagined but she said nothing.
In due course the 12th arrived, and Bob left early for the "Walk">
Returning in the evening after a no doubt enjoyable day, during which he had imbibed several strong refreshments, he arrived rather unsteadily opposite his house, and stopped suddenly as if he had been shot.
He gazed at the cottage, rubbed his eyes, and gazed again. Then, stopping a boy who was passing, he said, " Here, boy, what colour is that door and those windows!".
"Green" said the boy, an passed on.
Bob sat down in the grass and had another long look a smile spread over his face and he laughed.
Going over to the door he found it locked and barred. Mary was afraid, but he soon reassured her , and a few days later the door and shutters were painted a nice chocolate brown!

Willox wrote in his book;
A considerable portion of this street was then an open green at the south end, with a few one storey weaver's shops and dwelling houses on the west side. But the first house on the opposite side was rather pretentious for those days, consisting of one block with two dwelling houses of room and kitchen , each with a mid-room. The one house had a four loom shop beneath and the other had a six loom shop. Willox believed that the whole block to his grandfather William Willox...a great number of the Parkhead weavers came about the place from Girvan and Maybole.

The Scrap yard your thinking of is Shields scrap merchants, which was right next to the Berrachia hall church ( obviously no longer there). From the picture above they would have been situated where the wee white car is parked on the right side of the road. The new buildings where built around the late 1980s early 1990s. In the picture, I use to live in the first close ( top floor) on the main building on the left, 39 Burgher street., Paul.

Here is another old/recent Burgher street picture looking towards Parkhead cross. The Building on the right was part of the old electricty board, it has now been demolished, and new housing has now taken its place. [ img][/img]

You know something for all the years I lived in Parkhead I was only ever in that church once in my life. I was always a wee bit wary of those Mormons who used to try and get you to go in there...
