Can anybody help me with the names of the following Gallowgate pubs. They are shown on the 1950's map survey, but are just shown as 'PH', indicating public house ;
a) 202 Gallowgate (corner Ross Street)
b) 134 Gallowgate (corner Moir Street)
c) 174 Gallowgate
d) 524 Gallowgate (almost opposite Graham Square)
e) 507 Gallowgate (next to pend, between Abercrombie Street and Orr Street)
f) 705 Gallowgate (between Comely park Street and Slatefield Street)
g) 744 Gallowgate (corner David Street)
h) 615 Gallowgate (corner Wyper Place, next to Bellgrove Hotel)
Bear in mind heading up Gallowgate from Glasgow Cross odd numbers, left hand side, even numbers right hand side.

Most entries in the Glasgow GPO Directories and Kelly's Directories only show the licensee's name.

Charlie I'm sure will confirm that it was called Wards, but known as the 'daft shop' on account of the peever beds painted on the floor. Legend also has it that a horse was served a pint of beer in this particular establishement.
It sounds wonderful, and what would we give for places like this, instead of the soul-less haunts such as The Counting House and Walkabout.

Where was the Shandon Bells as I tried to get on their bus for Manchester in 1974 but ended up going by train...and by the way we won 3 - 2 and wrecked Manchester...at least we have never blown it up - maybe the next time.

Circa 1962 my Pals and I met in a Cafe in James Street Brighton , next to The |Mermaid ,every Saturday morning for Breakfast , then we went to White/ Blue Vale Baths ( Can not remember which ) left hand side of Gallowgate walking towards Parkhead.?. The guy in charge, John , never gave us a ticket but charged half price. It had Sauna and individual Steam Rooms which I have never seen before or since. You went in, lay on a wooden bed and regulated the steam to suit yourself, brilliant. Gallowgate Pubs ? When we left after 11am Pubs wer open so we went to quite a large Pub. Turn right at Gallogate , from whence we came and it was not far on same side of road. we got Pie and Peas ( Never Beans ).Lovely Ornate Mirror Gantry. One morning this Guy came in. Waited to be served , Pub busy , so he waited, after a while he picked up a chair and hurled it over the Bar and into the Gantry. The Bar Staff , he now had their attentipon , all came running and asked him what is you problem and he sais " A Pint Of Heavy ". They emptied him onto the Gallowgate and gave him a doing. We thought it was hysterical. Gallowgate Pubs, can not beat them.

I was born up the pen 427 Gallowgate, above mcNaughton & Watson .The pube next to the pen 429 was Mac's Bar . Mr Mc Nulty or Naulty was the proprietor. James Parkes was the manager. My Dad Tommy Conner was a barman for years as was a guy called John Andrews I think. I remember when the floor boards were bleached and had some straw? down my Aunt Sara McNair used to scrub it .and clean . It had a wonderful gantry. When women started wanting to join their husbands in the pub They extended out the back with a Snug bar. My cousin Jessie Anderson (nee McQuiggan) was a great singer a real pub voice her Hubby was Benny Anderson. I have some great memories of Mac's Bar but my heart sank when I saw it a few years ago when I was over on holiday It is now called I believe "The WEE MAN'S'

The pub at 705 gallowgate was called The Crown Bar in the late 50's and early 60's we lived at 697 gallowgate above Mcdonalds Bakery I can still smell the freshly baked Donuts and their Hot pea specials that wafted up the close I think there was three pubs between Comelypark St and Slatefield St When we moved to Greenfield we found it hard to get to sleep as it was so quiet we were so used to the Gallowgate traffic lulling us to sleep

Arnie, is that the Crown at the corner of Bellgrove and Gallowgate. If so, Allan and I used to go there when we were going out. He used to tell me to mind my own business and if there was a fight to lift my glass off the table and shut up. We like C&W then and they had great bands but the best turn was the Sally Army guy singing The Old Rugged Cross. He sold loads of War Cry. they also had these lights that showed up your bra under a white blouse, so we all wore white blouses. Aye those were the days all right

Hi Beth The Crown was on the Gallowgate in the middle between Comelypark st and Slatefield St it was there till the mid sixties I think the Pub you are talking about was on the corner of Abercromby St and Gallowgate It was called The Fourways I used to go in to see my Uncle who played the organ that would be about 1969/1970 His big numbers were Please Stay and The Answer to Everything But If I remember right it was the Shipbank of its day and attracted a lot of good chanters

PWM,when was #43 The Forres bar,I always knew that as The Golden Vale from the sixties anyway,it was owned by an Irishman James McFadjin who in later years took over Harry Daly's pub at Croft street #48 on the list and before Daly took it over it was Stevenson Taylors from my younger days growing up in Yate Street,I don't remember it being called the Croft Bar,must have been before I took an interest in pubs. ;D

I think the the Crest bar was at of Sword St before the Orient the pawn shop was about there also caltondefender you were right I remember we used to sneak into the bar to get the stamped bottles and then go into the wee offsales bit to get the 3d and it was right beside the pen that the Sneddons lived up You will also remember the jumps in Comelypark place called Tom Dick & Harry I never could pluck up the courage to do the big one Harry
