Whitby St was a schoolboys paradise, I can remember helping my next door neighbour (Jim Kerr) with his paper round, we used to offload the newspapers (Evening Times) from the steam train coming through from Brigton. Later when the line closed the whole tunnel system and station became a huge adventure playground for the whole area. A bunch of us used to light some flamin torches (a burnin plastic bottle on the end of a pole) and walk through the tunnel (the darkie) to Brigton a great adventure and laugh. We used to play fitba on the "Dummy Bridge" going towards Tollcross, or slide doon the grassy embankments on a piece of cardboard in the summer.

Hi Clansman I remember playing there when they closed the line, we used to play in the trees on the sides, too many rats in the tunnel to go there. Is that the same Jim Kerr who had a sister Vicki and Janette?

Here is one from my collection. This photo was taken in Whitby Street circa 1901/1902 when Whitby Stree was being built. The young apprentice in the front row centre was Robert Paton from Dalmuir. Several years later he got married and ended up living in Whitby Street where he died at the age of 65 in 1953.

Originally named Sir James Thomson Crescent before being changed to Winston Street in honour of Lord Newlands' niece Clementina Hozier's husband Sir Winston Churchill and later changed by a left wing Glasgow Corporation to Whitby Street in 1927 in remembrance of the German shelling of Scarborough and Whitby in Yorkshire during the First World War.
