There might be a wee 'Fly in the ointment' regarding Charley's 'present day' picture of the Smith household in which he states that the ground floor window (bricked up, as are the ones above it), was the very window that Madeleine Smith was supposed to have dispensed her coffee and cocoa from. Hmmm! Are you sure Charley? Scotland introduced it's own version of the hated "Window Tax" after 1748 until the whole tax was repealed in 1851. My question is: "Why would the Smiths reinstate the windows around the time (1857 or before) when Maddie was supposed to be serving 'nightcaps' to her soon to be ex, and THEN brick the windows back up again as seen today? It does not make sense. It would seem more likely she served her cocoa etc from one of the windows below and behind the railings. The Madeleine Smith story already is full of twists and turns, so I thought I would add my own wee 'Roundabout' to keep it flowing. ;D

My understanding is that Madeleine's bedroom was what was the basement, and the window in question was the one right at the corner, now bricked up. L'Angelier was thought to rap on the window with his cane, which would be the prompt for Madeleine to dispense the hot drink, to her beau, as he waited outside on the pavement.
I've never heard anything about the Smith's bricking up a window due the tax. They were very well off with a second house at Rhu, so I think it unlikely they would have had to economise to brick up a window. But you never know !
