Rottenrow originally ran from High Street to 110 High Street, though is now much shorter. It once formed one of the main highways westward out of Glasgow, from the Cathedral precint.
The derivation of the name has caused debate for many years. One theory is that it means 'Route de Roi' or 'roadway of the kings' or perhaps means the slightly more mundane 'routine route'.
The Royal maternity Hospital stood at number 163 and was built in 1906 to a design by R A Bryden, although some parts predated this. A laboratory block was added in 1913.
At number 154 stood the Albany Works, founded around 1879 by J McGlashen & Co., brewery engineers. Later became the premises of D McDonald & Bros., furniture manufacturers.
At number 25 stood the Cathedral Court tenements, built in 1895 to a design by J J burnet. They were demolished in 1971.
At number 12 stood Townhead Primary School, buolt in 1884. Now demolished.
At number 45 stood the Lock Hospital, built in 1843 and demolished in 1955. Built on the site of the 'Auld Pedagogue', fore-runner to the University of Glasgow.
At number 61 stood the School for Physically and Mentally Handicapped Children, built in 1882. Demolished.
At number 176 stood a works, premises of Scottish National Glass.
At number 81 stood Balmanno House, a home for elderly women.

awe right Charlie a know its Rottenrow noo, am no that blin on the map 1792 it says Rottenraw could be jist the way they spelt it back then, noticed on other old maps some of the streets had different spelling. And I did read that the intersection there was one of the busiest in Glasgow at the time, so it makes sense that it would mean "routine route" This map shows the intersection of Rottenrow and Drygate also tae the right it has the Molendinar. You can get these maps on National Library of Scotland web site

Had all my weans in the Rottenrow (seven) one of my sons was born 21st october 1979 and one of my daughters was born 15th july 1981, great hospital, but many changes over the years, used to be the womans volantary service would give out home baking at tea-time and you felt as if you were being looked after, saw your doctor most days, and you were in hospital for a couple of days at least, when I had my last child (1999) I never saw a doctor only a midwife that delivered my son and I ended up getting up through the night to help some of the first time mothers !!

I left the hospital with my son on the 23rd of october 1979, he had been born on the 15th but had to go under ultra violet light as he had jaundice I could have come home on the 19th but he had to stay in so I stayed with him as I had been in and out of the hospital for about 11 weeks and before he was born my stay in there was 5 weeks so I wasn't leaving without him.

I was born in Rottenrow as was my mum and a few of my sisters and a brother. My son was born there too on the 4th December 1991, I walked that hill the day before he was born to go to the anti-natal clinic, it was a killer. I went into labout that night and my son was born the following day. The only memory I have is being rushed to the theatre after he was born and then a few days after we were home we were both rushed in again by ambulance. My oldest child was born in Perth Royal Infirmary and my youngest in the Southern General and by far I think Perth Royal Infirmary was better.
