There is only one story that my Dad ever told me about being a Beardmore Cadet. He had attended the Empire Exhibition in Bellahouston Park in 1938 with the cadets and was late leaving the park so by time he got a tram home the only one he could get was one going as far as Bridgeton. He said he was marching along the London Road smoking a cigarette feeling all important when suddenly his two older brothers appeared from nowhere and thumped him about the head. They had been summoned from their own homes by my Granny to go and find him as it was late. He was 28 at the time and his brothers were a good bit older. My Dad said it was about 11pm when he got home. The funny thing about it all was that Granny must have sent her two daughters out to get the brothers in the first place. Well seen he was the baby of the family and when Granny spoke her word was law. I never had an opportunity to meet her as she passed away 8 years before I was born, but I'm named after her. PS Also thanks for putting the photo of the Beardmore Cadet uniform on the Glesga Keelies board as I never knew what his uniform looked like.

I found this wee snippet while surfing the net after reading about the Beardmore cadets. I saw the name Beardmore cadets Pipe Band on a 'link' to the Clan MacPherson web site.
I will have to do a bit of research and see if I can find any info on the Pipe Band (and what became of them)
The Beardmore Cadets are still sponsored today, by the Royal Highland Fusiliers, and many of the cadets have passed through our ranks down the years.
This was from the article I found. Oral tradition related that my roots were from the "Isles of Mull". My father was born in Parkhead, Glasgow in 1908, the only son of Archibald McPherson and Christina McKiggan of South Uist. He also had four sisters, Annie, Marion, Annabella and Euphemia. My father was a keen piper with "Beardmore Cadets Pipe Band". My grandfather, Archie McPherson, was born in Maryhill Parish, Glasgow in 1866, and had two brothers, Donald and Hugh, and two sisters, Annabella and Marion. My great-grandfather was the first to settle in Glasgow. He was born Archibald McPherson in Craignish, Argyle, in 1828, and married Marion McMaster of Morvern in 1854 in Glasgow.

My uncle Major John Mc Adam MBE was the CO of Beardmore cadets and also worked at Beardmores, the major emigrated to Canada around 50 years ago. I was also a cadet around that time and remember the old hall next to the ‘broo’ at the bottom of Duke St and Shettleston Rd.

Dear William , you should be very proud of your uncle ,major William macadam,as he was one of the finest men I have ever met , and boy was he the best, he certainly turned a lot of boys from the brink of wrong doing and moulded us into good citizens, and gave us the soul we never knew about , and instilled within us the strength ,wisdom and to show civic duty, and for me I have your uncle and your aunt to thank as they gave me good direction, and is for that I have been successfull throughout my life.
his famous quote ( we are second to none )
so so much so , through him we won the Lucas tooth three times in a row what a wonderfull man
god bless him
yours former sgt. Robert Bennett , 1959- 1962

Hi Eddie It's Dinger here, I posted the question about Beardmore wearing the GH badge because a lad was saying his father was Beardmore served with P&Ds years ago - he says he has a photo of his dad wearing the old BD uniform and Balmoral with the GH badge - sadly his dad passed away just last month - he said he will look out the photo and let me see it - don't know if the band recruited from other detachments and maybe his dad had come over to P&Ds from the GH at Hotspur Street Hope you are looking after yourself and keeping safe - We'll get together with the association hopefully in the near future So Keep Safe - Take Care - regards to the family Dinger Dinger

I joined the cadets ( Signals ) in 1968 when they gathered in the hall in Sacred Heart school. Then we moved to Shawfield. I loved it. I left in 1976. We met up with the Beardmore Cadets up at Parkhead many times. Friendly rivalry.
