In 1875 Robert Barr Snr. started a business in Falkirk, manufacturing aerated waters which were becoming increasingly popular in the second half of the 19th century, no doubt spurred on by the growing abstinence movement of the day.
In 1889 Barr's son, also called Robert, established a works at 1306 Gallowgate in Parkhead. The works were further extended in 1899 and 1914.
Their Irn-Bru brand became incredibly popular in the West of Scotland and the company flourished and began trading throughout the UK and overseas. Even as I write much of the works is in the process of being demolished, with much of the work beuing transferred to a purpose built facility at Westfield, Cumbernauld.
Irn-Bru is one of the few, if not the only, soft drink to outsell Coca-Cola on a regional basis.
