The Highland and Island Emigration Society was a voluntary association founded in 1851 to assist those effected by the potato famine. Its records are referenced HD4. They include lists of assisted emigrants who sailed to Australia between 1852 and 1857 (HD4/5). The emigrants are listed by ship and by family, giving the name and age of each person and where they resided in western Scotland. An index of the name of these emigrants is available online at ... www.scan.org.uk/researchrtools/emigration.htm
