I work out at Etna Industrial Estate at Craigneuk, Wishaw. I have a fascination about street names, and often wondered about one of the streets on the estate called Clamp Road.
Whilst looking on a website the other day, I discovered that Clamp Road was named after William Clamp, who was born in Motherwell and educated at Craigneuk.
William Clamp gained the Victoria Cross following action at Poelcappelle on October 9th 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres, at Passchendale.
It's nice to see Clamp acknowledged in a street name by the local council.

A gold medal is awarded annually at his old school in his honour and, 65 years later, Motherwell Council named a road in Craigneuk: 'Clamp Road'. The VC was handed to one of his brothers, James Clamp, who moved with the family to Coventry. When he died, it was passed on to his sister, Mrs J. Kelly who sold it to the Regiment in 1967. Corporal Clamp's VC and medals are presently held by the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond. www.greenhowards.org.uk/html-files/vcgc-clamp.htm
