A couple of doors along from Capaldi's was Campbell's off sales. My father used to join their club, and put ten bob a week into it for his Ne'erdy cairry-oot.
Looking up towards Parkhead Cross, on the right hand side was Cook's toys and books, where I purchased dozens of Commando, Superman, Batman and Mad comics. You could do a part exchange on second hand books. I remember buying my first proper adult book there : Mario Puzo's 'The Godfather'.

Nice picture of Leitch's Bakery, Archie Leitch used to be in my class at Riverside. We used to go in there at night for hot rolls.. Also you mentioned Capaldi's, The sportsman's Cafe, I used to work in there at night when I was still at school, I worked with young Tony, his sister Christine lives here in Cumbernauld.

When I first started in my present employment some twenty odd years ago I was eager to impress and took on all sorts of jobs using the volnteer man-power of my fitba team Bridgeton Waverley. When I was based in Newlands School which was the old SE3 Social Work Department I was asked to do some home decorating for an elderly lady by one of the Elderly Care Team. Anyway as we travelled in the car to the old lady's house the Care Worker began to ask us questions about where we lived in Parkead and on hearing my wee pals surname was Leitch she said ' I used to live above Leitch's Bakery shop' to which oor Davie immediatedly said ' Above Leitch's that wisnae your man that fell oot the windae when he was painting the windaes and painted a big white streak doon the wa''. The Care Worker nearly crashed the car at Davie's response and nearly had a heart attack when I said I had a photo of the paint streak - which she pleaded with me never to show to anyone in work. I used to blackmail he at work whenever I needed a loan of a van for the fitba team and if she wasn't too keen to give me the van I would shout across the room to the rest of her team ' Hear Ladies did I ever tell you the story about the guy who fell oot the windae'...and the van keys were thrown across the room to me. Well Mrs.Georgie Sharkey this is your life... ;D

There was Joanie old fashioned 'backlands' houses which were one storey high with a sort of outside spiral staircase leading to the first floor...simialir to the houses that were in Tollcross Road between Burgher Street and Helenvale Street.

I was speaking with my mother today and I was telling her about the things that are wrote here, I think I have stirred up a lot of memories of hers. My mother came from Tollcross Rd facing the depot and my father came from Brigton. Well she told me before they married and before my dad discovered the pubs him and his friends would go into the cafe in Springfield Rd it was called Toni Capaldis then and what they got was a Clark Gable this consisted of 2 scoops of icecream raspberry was used for eyes and 2 round choc biscuits for ears to imitate Clark Gables big ears. Does anyone remember this or is my mum to old for you all.

I cannot remember if I had posted this one before of the building at the corner of Malcolm Street and Springy Road...if I didn't then take it as a bonus for those of you who lived in the area...do any of you recall Annies shop across the road next to Frank Cross's she sold blankets, curtains and other household stuff etc., and sold her goods out of the boot of a car for many years after her premises were destroyed by fire.

These pictures are great. What a lot of memories they revive. Parkhead was such a thriving community. Remember the big Co-op on Westmuir Streeet? They had a lift I think and used to sell Ladies hats!! Which reminds me there was a Milliners at the corner of Westmuir Street and Crail Street.
The Co-op was a great shop to walk about. Woolworths as well...spent may a Saturday walking about there. Boots the Chemist too. All seemed 'big' shops to me as a child.

Springfield Cross or more commonly referred to by Parkheidians as 'The Lights'... see the work being carried out on the Commonwealth Games 2014 Stadium site being carried out in the background.

Hi Our Wullie what number were you in at Springfield Road. I lived at 690 and my gran was at 684. What is your surname? Did you live in the same close as Mrs McTavish who was on the ground floor (depends what age you are of course)

Hi caterina My surname is Mutter, yes Mrs Mc Tavish lived down stairs from us, I remember runnin up the stairs tae get ma maw as she started bleedin like hell through the nose, turned out to be a hemarage, and I think a short while after that she died. In the close next to me thier was Walter Mc Fadyen, and a bit further up there was Tommy Hunter. Me and Tommy sometimes went on our bikes all the way to Denny south of Stirling visited mae sister then all the way back. cu oorwullie

Hi Oor Wullie, I'm a weeeeeee bit older than you - when you were about 3 I think we left for Easterhouse but my gran was still there and I visited a lot. Walter McFadyen lived at 684, same close as my gran, his cousin, Llewelyn Owens, lived up the same stair, just him and his mum. Walter played with the McManus boys from 690 and Robert Nash from a couple of closes up from that. Also my older brother, John Gribbin.

hello oorwullie did you know a guy called neil riddle who lived in one of they closes up from you on springy rd. I think he must have been two closes further up near the lights, think one close further than Walter Mc Fadyen same close as Tommy Hunter, and I think their was a lassie there if I remember right Sandra Morrisen. Could be she moved in after Riddle moved out. cu oorwullie
