Hello Patrick, talking of pies reminded me of Spider who was the pie eating champion of Parkheed, he always used to win the pie eating contests at the Pipin pub in Duke St. He had a younger brother called Beatle who used to hang about with us along Salamanca St. The Bowlers Rest is the pub across from the library, its still there, at least it was the last time I looked when I was on one of Peters and Charlie’s Keelie’s tours of Parkheed, so was Barnie’s at least one of the buildings was when I last looked when I was on the tour. It used to be a second hand cloths shop come junk and scrap metal place. It was down Westmuir St near the corner with Crail St next to the co-op, perhaps Charlie will tell you what it is used for now and the Alfie connection I remember the two snooker halls, Alen’s was the bigger and that was where Dee and his wee men gang used to hang about sometimes. Charlie’s had the best crisps, with the wee bag of salt, and you could also get a nice wee bottle of ginger to go with them, and the snooker was cheaper as well so we spent a lot of time there. It was later turned into a disco type place, but I only went a couple of times (the talent wasn’t up to much)……….just sit back and wait now for the response fra the Parkheed Keelies wumin ;D

And the BIG Q is would if you could go back in time join a gang again ?. I was in the biggest gang ever known the RHF or better known as the MARYHILL MAFIA feared in battles the world over and in bars, if we could not find any one to fight with we fought each other. I recall one annual camp in Oakhampton the local gang the druids gave one of guys a real going over he was casevac to Plymouth naval hospital by helicopter, well we was out for revenge and we went into town baying for blood we found the lads responsible and they retreated to there car which we turned over and the local cops turned up and did the same to there land rover with the cops in it. The SP and MP was called in and the tide turned , we was confined to camp for the weekend the local mayor said that in all the years army units had been to Oakhampton ours had the worst record ever. Pitbull, the brigton area was another world to us in our part of Parkhead which was down Westmuir Street and around Salamanca Street and back along to Duke Street. The local Gang was the Sally Boys but the Border were the biggest gang in Parkheed. They were drawn from all around Parkhead and their "territory" ran from Shettleston junction with Westmuir Street (beyond was Tiger land) up to Parkheed X back along Tollcross Rd down to Crail Street, down Duke Street to the railway bridge and half way down Sringfield Rd. Through various connections, if there was big territory fight going to take place, the main Border gang could rely on support from the Parkhead Wee Men from further down Tollcross Rd behind the bus depot, The Sally, and a gang from Carntyne called the Bounty? . The Borders main "enemies" were the Tigers and the Rebels from Springfield Rd. I don't think they had much to do with the other gangs beyond the Parkhead area like the Tongs and Spur or Baltic Fleet although there used to be a lot of fights with the new gangs from the schemes like the Bar-el (Barlanark) and gangs from Easterhouse who used to have to get on and off the buses that went to the schemes that started and finished in Parkhead. (here ends a short history of the Gangs of Parkheed 1960-70's) as I remember them

I remember the Toll cross wee men as was in the gang William Trotter was the leader in those days we were from bus terminus A Shuggle we used the railway embankment to scrap with various gangs and had pigeons and loft to watch things. Also the brewery and Mc Vities was fair game. I was 15 years old when we moved to England. Familly blackets from Parkhead. I am now 63 and work mentoring boxing and juveniles I think this experience put me in a position to understand the youths of today although it was brutal I think it is in some ways worse today with weapons and drug gangs. I am proud of my family heritage and wear my tartan kilt especially Rabbie burns night every year and had dragoons at my mums funeral. I have worked in Scotland and Glasgow and seems to be a great City and the people a generous, helpful and talkative. Keith
