My grandfather William Bulloch enlisted with the 9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion Highland Light Infantry on August 4th 1917 as Private 56646...he was to be wounded twice and sent back to Blighty to recuperate before being posted to the 14th Battalion and was given an Honourable Discharge from them on May 28 1919.

When growing up with my grandparents my lasting memory of my 'Pop' was when he used to sit in his chair every night after work and constantly massage his right shoulder where he had been wounded during the First World War...he had also been wounded in the groin. As a wean I never realised that he had fought in the Great War and it could been the Boer War, the Jacobite Rebellion or the American War of Independence for all I could gather. Sadly he died when I was 10 so I never got a chance to spek to him about his experiences in the Trenches on the Western Front. I have his two War medals which I usually take with me to France and Flanders whenever I go over there.

Hi Waverley, Here is a copy of my Granda Neill Neilly's campain medal of the Great War the inscription on the side reads 24217 Pte N Neilly HIGH L/I Sadly through the years it has taken probably as much battering as the troops in this war ...

Eddie if your Granda had been in from the start he would've qualified for these three medals. Provided he had been overseas by the 23rd of November 1915 he would have received the 1914-15 Star if not he would have only have qualified for the other two.

Hi Waverley,
I did a half harted attempt at trying to trace his service record, but drew a blank, these records seem to have dissapeared. I know that if I was able to get his service records the medals can be replaced, but they come with a big DUPLICATE stamped on the back

Sadly the Medal office will no longer issue replacement WW1 medals they stoped this 5 years I think. Only in exceptional circumstances will they issue a WW1 replacement.
