The London Road runs from Glasgow Cross almost to the A74 was originally built as an alternative route into the city of Glasgow to avoid 'the odours and obnoxious smelling Gallowgate'. Using a entry from the 1963 Kelly's Post Office Directory I hope to recreate an imaginary stroll down the London Road. Come take a wee dauner with me as we try to remember and share our memories of the London Road which ran from Dan to Beersheeba..;D Most nights I walk up the London Road from Bridgeton Cross to Parkhead for a beer before I go home to Riddrie. As I pass every street in my mind I sometimes wonder how we managed to live in the environment and conditions that were available to us. Naw it was a grocer's shop...used to always have to go down there for my granny 's Danish butter. Remember how they used to wrap the block of cheese up in hard tissue paper and mark your message price in pencil...funny yer cheese never tasted the same without the taste of lead when they stopped doing that practice.

there was a wilsons antique or scrap shop sold bric a brac between marquis street and dunn street on the even numbers side, he also had a big scrap yard behind dunn street parralel with london road and bernard street, and that we bit called the herry ham is where my family the scotts came fae, also nuneaton steet and arrol place, my maws side came fae bernard street. and on the same side of the road as the bric a brac shop was jackie sandersons fruit and veg shop across fae that was the glenniffer pub and an indian shop canny remember whit they sold but my maw always commented that the wee indian women in there was really nice looking, when yer only 7 things like that go over yer heid. and up a wee bit nearer boden street was a laundrette, and crombies or cromwells licence grocers. and whats mcmahon at 948 thats the close we stayed up when i stayed wi my grandad, and there was the stamford bar up the road a wee bit past the wee ship stamford bar owned by wee john mcshane and he had another pub in dunn street at the corner of bernard street before that. and connettas had a chippy in london road between dunn street and marquis street , and i think they had another yin after that in mcduff street.

Had a wee visit today from Peter Mortimer and in between me preparing the lunches we were blethering away and one of my auld yins who was earry-wigging happened to put her tuppence worth in and before we knew it we had a great wee conversation about the London Road from Arrol Place to Boden Stret. So much so we will be going back to talk about her memories along with maps of the area to see if she can enlighten us even more.

I noticed you have listed E Nugent on 927 London Road, I know my Dad had his shop on the Gallowgate but not on London and I am desperate to find out more about this one incase he had another that I did not know about. I am Agnes Nugent I am logged on as my cousin just now until my account is validated. According to the 1960 GPO directory E Nugent was the owner of premises at 1029 Gallowgate, and also at the London Road address above. Hope this helps.

My mother was born 977 London Road. Her father was a carter and worked just a few closes away from there after the church Would be about 1930 before Jimmy Frier. Can anyone tell me the name of this yard. Does anyone have photos of this part of London road. I would be so very grateful for your help.

Charlie, Amethyst (who you call Pat) and I had a conversation about this before she seems to remember a yard not far from Newlands church I was saying that maybe before our time there might have been a yard between the church and Stamford lane, I don't know if you remember Gizzy bros I think they stored their stuff there for their cafes I was thinking this might have been a yard where they kept horses at one time, don't know if you might have any knowledge on this.

Oh ,Thank you Charlie, xxx I have been searching so long for this information. My mother used to go to that yard with her sisters and brother and after my grandfather had washed and groomed the hores on the Sunday. Overtime for him. He would let them give the horses a sweet for being good.My mother and sisters loved this time with the horses. I remember Jimmy and his lovely sister Cathy, but would you believe it was after his death that i started to look for this yard. So it could have been his father. I leart that there was a brother too but that must have been the same time as Jimmy. He used to let my husband park our little car in his yard when we came from France. He was such a kind and lovely person. Never for a moment did i think that it could have been the same yard. oh what a small world. Charlie you are a sweetheart!

Right Adi I get you now there was a garage next to the building between Newlands Church and Stamford Lane. There was also the Gigli yard as you say which in my time was used more as a builders come memorial stone yard but if my memory serves me right Adi there was doors which were very much like stable doors in the old building which backed onto the lane. I will ask Peter to check it out on his maps.

Thanks Amethyst my mother is getting better health wise but her confidence and mobility has taking a knock, I was just speaking to her there on the phone and she was telling me my brother had her out for a meal last night which she did enjoy but I think she was glad to get home again I will be going to visit her later on today, my aunt has been ill aswell and she doesn't get out and about now either what a difference a few months can make at that age.
I am glad you settled out this yard thing with Charlie and I'm also pleased you have found one another, these websites, keelies and gps are great it's always great to read stories when people find each other after been years apart, and also finding out they are related hope you and Charlie meet up someday.
Looking forward to seeing your photos.

Some new photos have been posted on the topic...had a wee greet to myself when I got the one of London Road and Nuneaton Street junction...the Stamford Bar aka Law's where I used to stand outside every Friday night waiting for my pocket money from my uncle Archie. Also John Orr's newsagent's where I worked as a paper bpy when I was 13. On the left the photographric finishers and the old Begg's Sawmill which went in fire when I was a mere wean I think it was set on fire by a spark from the Ruby Street Tram Depot back in 1962...the whole of Arrol Place and the buildings facing the saw mills were evacuated during the blaze but they couldn't waken me so they just left me and my granda sound asleep in our beds.

Adaline whenever a new photo is added to the Dan to Beersheeba topic the photo is placed on the original posting so go to the first message on the board and scroll down and you will see the photo of the Stamford Bar and Nuneaton Street.
