For years the myth has existed that the 'ball, the boot and the goals were some sort of unofficial memorial to Johnny Thomson the Celtic goalkeeper who died so tragically whilst playing against Rangers at Ibrox in September 1931. However, local investigation has proven that this collection of stones was there long before Thomson's death and it may well have been a commemoration to Bridgeton Waverly Juniors whose ground was close by Yate Street...as claimed by the son of a former Waverley committee man living in the USA at the time of this feature in the Evening Times by Bob Crampsey. Most likely the story that it was created by 'a causier' working on the cobblestones whom in order to stop local kids annoying him as he worked asked them to find unusual stones and from these he built the Camlachie Cobblestones.
