Hi Trotsky we only knew John (Conga) through a friends sister who he was married to years ago. Frank my husband can't remember how he was called Conga if he does I'll let you know.
We were curious about his brothers death as Tam would have been younger than us.

Hello adaline, yes Tom must have been a year or two younger than Conga which should make him about 54-55. Conga got his nickname from the way he walked with his arms hung by his side, just like King Cong in the original film which must have been shown in the cinemas at the time, surprised he is still known by that name, would hate to think I was still known by some of the nicknames I got labeled with way back then

never bothered wi the gangs but remember a few of the names from that time Like yersel Wullie I never bothered with gangs either...unfortunately I cannot say the same for my mates who are forever reliving their 'bad auld good days' whenever we meet up for a drink. We have a variety of 'cardboard gangsters' in our pub who will tell you their stories about the Torch , the Spur , The Parkhead Rebels , the Wee Men , the Baltic , the Sally and the Border and many others if you are prepared to listen to them. ;D

Robert Simpson and the Hamiltons went to Parkheed School and Robert Simpson was in my class. The guys you mention became the Sally in the early 70's but before then there were another group that stood about the street corners before they graduated into the Palace Bar and other localwatering holes. Jim Ferguson, the McClealand Brothers Rab and Mush, Spiders younger brother Beatle, John Young and Joe McLean and some others. We were never really into the fighting bit but when the other guys took over the Street they seemed to have running battles with the mob that hung about at the junction of London Rd and Springfield Rd, the Rebels. They were a few personal battles going on as well with some nasty stuff being handed out.

Naw, don't know the name Patrick. Alfie Allen, Spider, Joe Cooks, and Wullie Bennet were the Border guys who hung about Allens, we rarely went in there but would hang about along the Road at Charlies. Us guys from Salamanca Street would be OK with the bigger Border gang in both snooker halls but sometimes those "wee men" frae the fire station area didn't like us hanging about with the big boys in the snooker halls and would shoo us away back doon tae our own wee bit of Parkheed ;D

I also lived on caroline st kiltie, no80 with my granny, when the snooker closed we used to walk down the road togethermyself and cannonball [ I think his first name was John]he used to do handsprings, and walk on his hands all the way down westmuir st until the chipshop just past crail st,he was a good wee snooker player as well. ;D It cost me a bag of chips to see him doing it but it was worth it ;D

Haw Andy ... Mouser came into the Clanny to see Plum just as I was leaving yesterday. I had to leave as I think Big Andrews was on his way down as well...I could never have survived having to duck and dive all those flashing blades and open razors of those three auld Sally Boys in the lounge.

A wee offshoot frae another offshoot of a thread that Charlie started, maybe some of the blanks can be filled in here Some east end gang names are self explanatory, usually they are named after where they hung about, e.g. the Sally frae Salamanca Street, Baltic Fleet, Baltic Street, Calton Tongs, Calton, (but why Tongs ) and whit about the Tigers frae Shettleston, the Torch, the Border, the Wee-Men and Rebels, where did these names originate from; an I’m sure there are others that can be added tae the list
