There has been some debate concerning how Vinegarhill got its name, with the Battle of Vinegarhill at County Wexford in 1798 being put forward as a likely contender. It is more probable that the name derives from D. King & Co., who had a vinegar works there from 1837 until around 1860.
In the 1870's the city fathers decided to move the carnival from the saltmarket outside the High Court, as they felt it unsightly, and so it moved to Crownpoint and Vinegarhill.
The site at Crownpoint didn't last long as the land was taken over to build Whitevale Tram Depot, leaving Vinegarhill as the primary location for the carnival.
The 1896 map of Camalchie shows Vinegarhill well developed as a carnival site with a switchback railway in situ on the ground to the east of Vinegarhill Street. By 1912 the carnival had relocated to the west side of Vinegarhill Street within a walled compound, which was owned by the Green family. The postal address of the showground was 918 Gallowgate, and many showpeople bear this address on their birth certificates.
In 1930 the land at East Vinegarhill was acquired by the Corporation who built a small childrens swing park and a football pitch, which many of us will remember.
The 1928 voters roll shows that there were 190 adults eligible to vote, so by this time Vinegarhill was a significant part of Camlachie life. As we know the carnival went to Glasgow Green during the Fair fortnight, but the showpeople continued to live at Vinegarhill. The showpeople left Vinegarhill in the mid 1980's and the site now forms part of the Forge Retail Park.

Fom the Glasgow Herald of July 20th 1891 ;
'Yesterday afternoon a tea meeting was held in the Showground, Vinegar Hill, Glasgow, under the auspices of the Travellers National Total Abstainers' Union. About 150 children were accommodated in Mr. Clark's Ghost Tent and about 450 persons in the Victoria Theatre. It was stated that the society had a membership of 7000, and that the 'Caravan', the society's journal, was distributed to 10,000 annually.'

When i was looking through camlachie school register for the 1930's and 40's, there was hundreds from vinegarhill attending the school for part of the year and then they would go travelling, i don't think it would be allowed now.

Aye, changed days holywell37, but that's how it was back then. The showpeople had a particular lifestyle and culture and stuck to it. Good for them I say.
Many of us who attended Camlachie had friends at school from Vinegarhill, in particular I'm thinking about the Stirlings, Testos, Slaters, Smiths et al.

Alan it was Big Dunky but I think he was known as something else not MacKay and I am sure he was something to do with the Deans family a brother in law if I remember correctly. Bertie Deans was one of the most gifted players ever to grace the east end and how he never made it big time I will never know...

You are thinking of big dunky lindsay, tearlach, he wasn't related to the deans'. his father played in goal for aberdeen in the thirties or forties, so dunky was an aberdeen supporter, and i think may have refereed one or two games at those wee tournies.

John thank God you are on here as me and Big Peter and Ako have been racking our brains in the Clanny all night trying to remember his surname. I had him down as Bobby Dempster but then I remembered it wisnae Bobby. Big Dunky used to do his party piece in the Auld Reekie...The Deadwood Stage and go through all the actions. John I am sure he had a brother who was married to the Deans's sister Georgie who lived in London and later on Blackhill or am I getting mixed up with someone else from Janey...

I don't know if dunky had a brother married on to deansy's sister, he had a few brothers and sisters that i didn't know as they were all adults when i was a kid. I knew gordy well, he imigrated to south africa in the eighties i think. When my boy played football in the strathclyde boys league, dunky was a referee and he was terrible.

He was rank rotten as a ref John and in saying that he must've made a fortune in the early days of Helenvale when it was an astro turf park as he always hung aboot waiting on games when a ref never turned up. I asked Bilko tonight when he phoned the Clanny and he reckons his older brother was married to one of the Deans lassies as well...we will check it out with Billy Deans at the weekend. If I remember wasn't one of their brothers killed by the IRA in the early 1970's when they tried to hijack his vehicle at a border crossing point...I am sure Colin told me that but then Colin could tell some whoppers as well.

Vinegarhill was originally a showground owned by the famous Green family of Green's Playhouse fame. They introduced a mobile cinema as an attraction for use in their Camlachie Showground as films became more and more popular.

I don't know if you are aware of this Charlie, but it is, rumoured that Vinegar Hill is named in commemoration, of a battle in Ireland.

If you look back up the page you'll see Patrick that we have already had some discussion re the name and origins of Vinegarhill...I had to remove the photograph in the meantime Patrick but will put it back on when I get the owners permission to print it.

Do you know who the owner is Charlie? Yes I do Patrick and believe me they are the worse agency going for printing anything of their photographs on the internet...they will try and close you down if you print anything of theirs. I am a member of the said agency and they won't allow me to print anything without their permission.

No need to apologise Patrick as you weren't to know. I know I am a bit of a pain when it comes to copyright but hopefully all this will be sorted when GEISHA gets its charity and educational status approval. Now that my son and I are talking and Tam's boy is back from Canada we may at long last get that website finally built as well which will allow us to approve any photographic material before it is posted on here.
