I have been gathering material for a wee article I am doing for a sports fanzine website and I am quite literally amazed at the grounds that were in the east end from say Camlachie to the New Barrowfield Ground aka Celtic Training Ground out the London Road. Surely Bridgeton Waverley and Parkhead Juniors Grounds were actually closer than Tannadice and Dens Park...we are talking less than thirty yards across the London Road.

The oval shaped sports ground was the Nelson Recreation Ground, which opened around 1923, and was owned by local horse dealer William Nelson. it may have been used as a flapping track and occasional boxing venue.
It was later known as the Olympic Sports Stadium, and from its position you can see it disappeared when Barrowfield housing scheme was built.

Peter it is amazing the stuff that we are picking up on Bridgeton Waverley and their original ground in Barrowfied (Camlachie) their name along with Parkhead Juniors was even raised in Parliament when they were been forced out of their grounds by Glasgow Corporation for housing redevelopment.

I have been collecting a lot of stuff on Bridgeton Waverley in recent months and whilst I knew they had legendary status as a Junior club amongst many old east enders I am amazed at how much local history was packed into their 40 years of existence as a Junior side. Sadly their rise and demise is like a mirror image of the rise and fall of the east end that we all grew up in as children and I never knew that Maxton and other political figures of the time had connections with the club. I have to admit that I am extremely proud of my boys who played for the club when I reformed Bridgeton Waverley as an amateur side in 1976 but I was never aware until recently how much of a social history the club had in relation to the people of Bridgeton, Camlachie, Mile End and Parkhead. Makes me sad and determined to reform the club in some form.
