what a great photo waverley, can you tell me in which direction it was taken , and what side is the Wellshot rd and Darleth st I was born off darleth st at 10 Ducraig St cheers rfeadoonunder The photie is taken looking east along Shettleston Road. The tenement on the right is at the corner of Shettleston Road and Wellshot Road and is still standing. The one storey structure on the left is at the corner of Darleith Street, ans it also stands, as The Cottage Bar.

Permission to revive this worthy thread?
Thanks.
In reply to Mags, it can't be the Kirkhouse as the church graveyard stands to the east of that.
My guess that the pub in this pic of the Middle Quarter is where the Portland of today stands.

On the right hand side directly above the heads of the two girls the building looks very much like the cottages that stand just before the Chinese restuarant which used to be known as the Pine Trees which is now known as the China House Restuarant.
I will try and lookout the original postcard which I have in my collection...if you look closely you can make out the name Middle Quarter at the bottom of the card which seems to have been missed in the original scan.

I think its almost certainly the Portland public house on the lh side. Further on, same side, you can just see the spire of the church at Annick Street.
As for Middle Quarter, the village of Shettleston was originally split into three, Eastmuir, Middle Quarter and Westmuir.
Interestingly, I was just checking my Kelly's Directory for 1928 for this stretch of Shettleston Road, and almost where this photo was taken on the rh side was the Registrar of Deaths Births and Marriages for the district, a man called Andrew Shearer. His office address was 1214 Shettleston Road, which was next door to the present day Shettleston Barbers, just at the pelican crossing.

From what I remember the Portland Arms is listed as an Art Deco pub which was built around the mid-1930's.

The Portland Arms in the photie is the old premises. The present building dates from 1938, and is built on the site of the original.

The ancient version of the name first enters the History books in 1179 when a Papal Bull addressed to the Bishop of Glasgow refers to a “villam filie Sedin”Its said thet Shettleston was named after Sadins daughter.Sadin was a saxon colonist who settled on the banks of the camlachie burn and named the aera known as Shettleston today Schedinstun. In 1226 a Charter granted by Alexander II to the Bishop of Glasgow prohibits the Provost, Baillies and Officers of Rutherglen from taking Toll or Custom nearer to Glasgow than the “cross of Shedenestun”. This cross has never been pinned down to any one place. Three fordable places have been identified as Bogleshole Ford, Carmyle and Dalmarnock. Carmyle being closer to Shettleston and the Ford closer to Rutherglen, but where was that cross? The ford at Bogleshole was still in use at the start of the 20th Century and there was a notice proclaiming that the ford was still open up to about the year 1910. Over the years there have been 48 different spellings for shettleston.Theres also belief that the name comes from Shuttle Town at the time when Shettleston was a Weavers Village,Also we have The Sheddens which means a parting of the ways Taken from Eastern Standard 1950

Does anyone know the name of the cemetery just along from the Kirkhouse Pub. I have been trying to find some information about it. MacDuff the graveyard you are on about was the original site of Shettleston Parish Church (Kirk) , hence the name of the pub The Kirk House...the church is long demolished but the graveyard is still accessible. There are a couple of graves which have Covenanter links I will look up my records to get their names.

I only knew the cemetery from the Hallhill Road end of it and assumed it was the same cemetery. I used to pass it when I went to Parkhead from Easterhouse on the bus.
