It's a shame about the wee dog, but my sympathy lies much more with the man who died and I feel sad that his illness culminated in his death.

I am not fully aware of the circumstances folks. All I know is that the nephew who died was a bit of a loner and had little if any contact with his family for many years preferring the company of his wee dog to that of his family. There was a history of drink problems hence the liver and kidney failure which was the cause of death...I am not advocating that the death of an animal is more severe than a human but I just feel it is a reflection on society that a man and his dog can die alone in this day and age.

God rest the poor guy and his dog, drink can be a curse when it takes a grip, I think this is proof that someone's illness with drink doesn't only affect humans poor animals also can be affected.

One of the few thigs that I constantly think about, is what would happen to my four dogs whenI depart this life. I`m sure if I knew this was near, I`d have my dogs put down. Does that sound heartless, sometimes I think it is. The trouble is, I don`t think they`d be happy with someone else. What a morbid post...sorry. Davie.

So sorry to read of the man and his beloved dog. Davie, no need to apologise for your post, you're only expressing the love you feel for your dogs. Jean

We used an option when we left Zims and gave our wonderful pavement special to "Friends" as we did not know where we would be living and she was a big dog. She disappeared from their house and we never knew what happened to her. I was devastated, on reflection, I would rather have had her put to sleep at leasst I would know what happened to her and that she had not been mistreated, as they lived out in the bush and anything could have happened to her. I still cry thinking about it. Think that is why I am paranoid about leaving here and what to do about our girls. Although I am getting pretty resigned to quarantine

It's a difficult thing to explain, this passion about our pets.We grew up with a menagerie, but dogs have always been my best. Have always loved and cared for them, but with working and the children, they were just that, PETS. then when the children left home and we had more time on our hands, we spent more special times with our dogs, but these two we have now are even more special as they were rescued. The one from the most awful circumstances, the other was on death row in our local SPCA. We walk every morning, they follow me around until I go to work and wait for me to come home. They love everybody until they get too close to the car or to me. They ask for nothing except my love and undivided attention at times. Allan is just as soppy about them as I am. As I said, I am a dog person except for the cats at work, Have nothing against birds, fish etc, but not my cup of tea

If I had my way I would have two sheep in my garden just to keep the grass down. We now have deer at the end of the street and my pal Stan witnessed two deer grazing in MacBeth Street in Parkhead where I used to live the other day. I have always found people who do not have animals in their lives are usually sad and lonely individuals and normally have deep rooted emotional problems. As Beth already said an animals love is unconditional and their loyalty like a baby or a small child goes way above anything that some adults can ever reach...I personally would lose my sanity if it wasn't for my two dugs , two rabbits , two love birds and two cockatiels.

Although it is a shame that the man died, in this case my sympathy is with the dog. The guy did have a choice in his life /death, were as the dog never.

I have said before on here when I had to have my wee yorkie (Prince) put to sleep and it will be 12 years ago this march I swore then I wouldn't have another dog as it broke my heart too much. I still think and miss him, he was 16 years old and we had him for 14 of his years, he was my in-laws wee dog and they had him from 6 weeks old.

Quote by Charlie: I have always found people who do not have animals in their lives are usually sad and lonely individuals and normally have deep rooted emotional problems End Quote Charlie, I don't think I'm either sad or lonely...could have deep rooted emotional problems...who knows, but I don't have a dislike of animals per se. I love cows, horses, sheep and chickens (yes I know they're birds) hence the reason I go for a week to a farm every year. My problem is with domestic animals and it's a hygiene thing (do you all wipe your dogs/cats bums when they've done a woopsy and before they then rub their bums on the carpet...yeuchhh ;D) which I just can't help, although I did let my kids have budgies when they were younger and what a mess they made Maybe one day when I'm old and grey I'll wish I had a wee cat to keep me company, but till then....

i must admit caterina i did always wipe the wee dogs rear end after i had him out and he was so used to havin it done he would always stand and wait wi his ass in the air to have it cleaned and thats no lie he was a wee yorkie who was with me from 6 weeks till he died when he was 12 he was going blind and deaf i used to walk him the same route every day and night and on this particular night i let him off his lead thinkin he would follow same route but he ran across the road in front of a car it it his rear end he turned to look at me as if to say wat the f.... was that i was screamin like a banshea he did not die then i rushed him into pdsa who took him overnight told me he had broken leg and hip but could be fixed i picked him up next morn it cost me 160quid i took him to my vet who took wan look and told me he was too old and it would be best to have him put down i was gutted but felt she knew best he died in my arms i was on ma knees in the surgery totally devastated i had him cremated that was another 130quid his ashes r now at my bedside seein as how he was not allowed in there when he was alive but i then found out i could have taken him to a specialist who could have prob fixed him that made me feel even worse cause i felt so guilty for lettin him off leash in first place and to be honest i have never been able to tell my son wat really happened to the dog coz he too was heartbroken and would have blamed me most definately makin me feel even worse so to this day my son thinks he just took ill and had to be put down that was in the yr 2001 but u really do become attached but they can be a bind if u go on holiday i canny put mines in a kennel i would feel so guilty about that too so i pay for someone to come in when i am away coz my cat is now my baby mad eh

Everytime Max went out he would be put into the bath and have his little feet washed down, and a little spray of water on his botty.BUT if i could have him back i would wash his feet with my kissses. This is of no importance to hell with the carpets, and let LOVE take over. Our house would still have been a HAPPY CLEAN HOUSE Max ;-)) For 15 years of my life I used to take care of a darling old lady that was 90 years old, that had worked for all the BIG people in Paris, Christian Dior, and made clothes for MOST of the houses in Paris. Well everyday i bathed her in her bed and she would cry ,because she was embaressed, and I used to cuddle her and sing and say,i know that you would do it for me.EVERYONE needs someone in their lifetime, especially when they ,are sick, and what JOY to have someone do what they have do it with LOVE,What WONDERFUL years we had together with her telling me of all the important people that she had worked for and all the wonderful clothes for stars in America and Paris, she had designed, and sewn them, and searched all over paris for the just right cloth, buttons, and everything that was needed to make these works of art. I LOVED her,and she LOVED me too. XXXXXXXXXX We made each day together HAPPY DAYS XXXXXXX
This little poem is for people that take care of animals ,and peope that they LOVE.
FEET TO BE WASHED.
Most of us,these days, never really get our feet dirty We wear shoes, not sandals;we put on overshoes when it rains. We ride in air -contioned cars insted of walking down lond dusty roads. or streets where animals bear the burdens of commerce. Many of us never get our feet dirty at all.
Not so when Jesus and his disiples gathered for the Passover meal It was one of the obligations of hospitality to enable a guest to bathe away the stains of travel, for a slave to cleanse the feet of those who reclined at your table, That night there was no servant present to wash travel-dusted feet; Only twelve men and te Man of God they followed.
Did no one want to play a servan'ts part?
Then Jesus rose from his place at the table, tucked a towel under the girdle of his robe, filled a basin, and began washing feet. It didn't matter that this was menial labor- and that He was a craftsman-a-carpenter; a teacher and a rabbi. It wasn't important that he was a leader and those twelve men were his followers. What was important was that here was an unmet need- So He filled the basin and washed ther feet.
And they didn't understand. They didn't want the job themselves, But they knew it wasn't proper for someone like the Master to do a slave's job. to wash their feet. I wonder how long it took them to comprehend . .
For we still haven't fully learned his lesson. Our pride and dignity are still important to us. "The way things are supposed to be done" still keeps us from seeing "what needs to be done" We still become wrapped up in our own needs and angers, our fears and griefs And we are blind to the agony of others.
It is only when the servant Christ becomes the center of our lives that we are free enough of our self-concerns to meet the need of others. It is only then that we are truly free- free, that is,to serve.
And He girded himself with a towel
and washed their feet.

Aww Blondie that was so sad...you must have been absolutely devastated. When I say I don't have a love for domestic animals, it doesn't mean I can't appreciate how much a person could love and bond with a wee animal that played such a big part in their lives. I would just add that the 3 budgies I had for the kids - when they all died I buried 2 of them in my mother-in-law's garden and the 3rd one in my auntie's garden cos my mother-in-law had by that time also died so surely that gives me some brownie points. Also one Sept weekend Monday, one of the budgies had impaled himself on the plastic bird I bought him to play with (naughty budgie!!) anyway I phoned all around and found a vet who was prepared to come out to his surgery - I drove the bird, cage and 2 kids to Pollokshaws Road, the vet had come from Eaglesham to meet us - he treated the budgie, said he probably wouldn't survive that long, but he bloody well did and that was all down to my loving care and attention ;D

Ah don't think there's necessarily anythin wrang wi people no hivin a fondness fur animals - it's jist the way some people are. In ma view, it's their loss, no the animals' .

Ok all you non-animal lovers here is wan for aw youse... www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXXWFbPjgmcHere are the lyrics of a song by Eric Bogle. It is about the horses of the Australian Light Horse in World War 1. The below is about the song as Eric Bogle describes. The story is as follows: The song is of course about the horses sent overseas during WW1 to serve in the various theatres of war. Of the approximately 53000 horses Australia sent overseas during WW1, only one ever returned to Australia after the war. At the end of the war the Anzacs were ordered to get rid of their horses, the authorities did not want them returning to Australia and perhaps bringing in anthrax or TB or suchlike back into the country. Most of the horses were sold or given away, but in Palestine the Light Horsemen refused to give or sell their horses to the Arab population of Palestine, and chose instead to shoot them all. I based the song on an actual Light Horseman called Elijah Conn who had a horse in Palestine called Banjo. Elijah never forgot Banjo and for the rest of his life could not talk about him without tears coming to his eyes. AS IF HE KNOWS It’s as if he knows He’s standing close to me His breath warm on my sleeve His head hung low It’s as if he knows What the dawn will bring The end of everything For my old Banjo And all along the picket lines beneath the desert sky The Light Horsemen move amongst their mates to say one last goodbye And the horses stand so quietly Row on silent row It’s as if they know Time after time We rode through shot and shell We rode in and out of Hell On their strong backs Time after time They brought us safely through By their swift sure hooves And their brave hearts Tomorrow we will form up ranks and march down to the quay And sail back to our loved ones in that dear land across the sea While our loyal and true companions Who asked so little and gave so much Will lie dead in the dust. For the orders came No horses to return We were to abandon them To be slaves After all we’d shared And all that we’d been through A Nation’s gratitude Was a dusty grave For we can’t leave them to the people here, we’d rather see them dead So each man will take his best mate’s horse with a bullet through the head For the people here are like their land Wild and cruel and hard So Banjo, here’s your reward. It’s as if he knows, he standing close to me, His breath warm on my sleeve, his head hung low. As he if he knew. Copyright Eric Bogle July 2001 The lyrics here have been reproduced with permission of Eric Bogle.
