Charlie, I appreciate this and the Bridgeton site are being reconstructed, and are, at the moment incomplete. Yesterday I had a wee look through both and , to my astonishment, found only one officer. Any theories as to why? Regards, Davie.

I will check it out...however I would probably say that there were very few officer classes staying in the east end tenements of Bridgeton or Parkhead during the Great War. From what I know an officer was anyone above the ranlk of a Serjeant which was the highest rank a N.C.O. could reach without having to go to OTC or buy a commission.

It is reckoned that Britain lost just under 42,000 officers during the First World War. This far exceeded the German Army's Officer losses as the Germans quite literally would not send soldiers 'over the top' unless they were led by an N.C.O....thereby making sure that the majority of the German Officer class could only be killed in bombardments and not by leading from the front like their British counterparts.

My Uncle Norman Cowie died at the Somme aged 18years. He came from Baltic Street and it would be nice if he could be added to the Parkhead Role of Honour in due course. Sadly, when my mother died in 1988 in Parkhead we couldn't find the medals and Kings Penny she had been keeping. She was 80years old and had a bit of dementia and we think she maybe threw them out or gave them away.

I have added him to the Bridgeton Roll of Honour...I see from the CWGC records he is listed on the Thiepval Memorial To Th e Missing. In that case the chances are I will have a photograph of his name on the said Memorial I will check it out and posted it on here.

154 try here www.jstor.org/pss/175191and the quote If You Take the King's Penny, You Do the King's Work
There is of course the King's Shilling for those who volunteered but maybe one of the others on here can help - that's about all I could find.
